SYDNEY (BNO NEWS) -- An Australian teenager was charged with murder on early Saturday morning after she allegedly killed her newborn baby earlier this week, police said.

The 19-year-old teenager gave birth on Wednesday morning to a baby boy at her home in Canowindra, a town near Cowra in the central west region of New South Wales, about 317 kilometers (197 miles) west of Sydney.

Police said the teen was discovered by family members shortly after giving birth and she was taken to Canowindra Hospital suffering blood loss, before being transported to Orange Base Hospital.

"Family members attended Canowindra hospital with the body of the full-term baby," a police spokesperson said. "Police from Canobolas Local Area Command subsequently commenced an investigation and attended the woman's address where they established a crime scene."

A post mortem was conducted on Friday which revealed that the baby died as a result of numerous puncture wounds to the chest. "The woman was released from Orange Base Hospital yesterday and was subsequently arrested at Orange Police Station," police said.

The teenager, who was not immediately identified, was charged with murder on early Saturday morning and has been refused bail to appear at Orange Local Court later on Saturday.
