BERLIN (BNO NEWS) -- A 58-year-old woman suffered serious injuries on Sunday when she set herself on fire near the German parliament building the Reichstag, police said.

The incident happened at around noon when the 58-year-old unidentified woman poured a flammable liquid over her body and then set it on fire. A guard who had been watching her provided first aid.

A statement from Berlin police said the woman had several banners with her that protested against the political situation in Latvia and the Latvian government's handling of her mother. Further details about her situation were not immediately available.

The woman, who has second-degree burns on her body, was taken to a nearby hospital in the German capital. Her current condition was not immediately known.

Earlier this week, a 36-year-old immigrant from Iran set himself on fire near the royal palace at the Dam Square in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. He died the next day.
