SANYA, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- China and Russia on Wednesday agreed to improve bilateral cooperation, promoting relations and safeguarding common interests, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The agreement was reached in a meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev. The two leaders met in the southern Chinese beach resort of Sanya ahead of the BRICS summit.

The two nations will work on enhancing mutual political support in safeguarding national sovereignty, security and interests. Medvedev remarked that Russia is willing to push the bilateral cooperation with China to a new level.

In addition, the two nations agreed to cooperate on major energy projects such as the west natural gas pipeline from West Siberia to China and expanding cooperation in economy and trade, investment, advanced technologies, finance and culture.

China and Russia will focus on strengthening communication and coordination on international and regional issues including the global economic and financial system reform.

Medvedev added that he expects to further expand trade and promote cooperation on investment and major areas such as oil, natural gas, hydro-power and nuclear with China.

On Thursday, Hu and Medvedev will participate in the BRICS Leaders Meeting in Sanya. During the summit, BRICS members (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will exchange opinions on major issues concerning the global economy, finance and development.

The agreement came in during the 10th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation.
