Good luck with the notebook - I'll never buy another Asus. I also suggest that before you commit, you check the Asus Global website support forums for the problems people have been having. As to purchase, try this thread for Thai online options - dated, but still very useful:

That's correct. Acer automatically give one year free insurance on every new Acer bought. I cracked my note book screen, thought I was in for a big bill, took it to Acer repair center (between True/UBC agent & Mazda dealer), and they had me fill in an insurance claim (I had no idea about the insurance), 5 days later - a repaired note book. Another good reason for buying Acer products.

For Acer versus Asus, yes i am informed about that. But the Asus is hard to beat with a I7 core 8gb and a 17 inch screen Full HD 2 hybride Hdd 1Tb. for high intensive usage. in fact it compare with a gamers pc alienware at a much better cost.

I'll have a look to see if there is something similar in acer product line and compare.

I bought my asus g73jh one year ago in Singapore. I'm very happy with it, I recommend you lose one of the hybrids and install a SSD instead for your OS and programs.

Asus' warranty is top notch as well. You get 1 year accident warranty, incase you drop it or spill your drink over it. And two years normal warranty. They are both global. I had to use it twice,. Once in Phuket Town because my screen broke, they ordered a new one for me and installed it hassle free. And once in BKK my power brick died, drove over to the asus service center and walked out with a new brick 10 mins later.

By the way had a look to Acer models available in asia and Nothing come close in price to quality ratio with this Asus one.

What's an I7 8gb? Processors are rated speed wise in Ghz. The fastest I see on the notebook market, is an i7 2.2 Ghz quad core...

Do you have experiences with the hybrid disks? SSD for root and swap partitions and normal HD for the data and media would be nice combination.

For the laptops I still go for the IBM/Lenovo thinkpad's witht the nipple. Unfortunately it's more and more difficult to find a good and handy laptops.

No i have no experience with hybrid or SSd HDD.

From what i know hybrid has 4 additional gb of fast accees memory where the most used part of software are dynamically stored to reduce access time.

But it is not the same as a SSD HDD whis is a HDD with very faxt access to all the storage space which is mainly useful for OS and programs

That would be a good way to go. My slightly older MacBook Pro uses firewire 800 at 800 MBps I/O, which is considerably faster than USB2. But when you're transferring 80 GB files, it still takes some time! SSD are still quite pricey too.. My 2TB external has a SATA port, firewire 800, 400 and USB 2. I don't know what speed the SATA port is, my laptop doesn't have one... USB3 is coming... Anyway, it seems like things are developing pretty quickly, so i will be waiting a while for the I/O ports to be sorted out and the price of SSDs to come down a bit before I upgrade. It would seem like carrying around a 17", with two 500 GB SATA 7200 RPM drives would be a bit heavy and probably would run hot. But if one needs the biggest, newest and fastest "laptop," I guess it's what you gotta do. By the way, I always hated that nipple!

This thread is not really a great advert for Acer. What I've learnt is that girlfriends get so irritated when you have one that they smash them on the floor and even if you don't have a girlfriend you can expect the screen to crack within a year anyway

Think I'll stick with my 5 year old never-repaired Lenovo Thinkpad (tounge in cheek - I know it's an entirely different horse for an entirely different course and a bit of an expensive filly)
