I have read the comments posted on these pages by people arguing about what is obscene and what is not obscene. about what is fun and what not is fun.About what is culture and whether it's modern or traditional.i have read about a man who stand's up in public and say's he is worried for the reputation of his country and obviously how the rest of Asia and maybe the world view's this behaviour. there are all sorts of never ending arguments over this,there is the question of corruption and prostitution which are timeless old chestnut's that will be with us (as one reader say's"where there are people") for ever and will never be stopped 100%.I have read all this on these pages,and i agree with some and disagree with others.I think out of all these question's the tricky one is the reputation of a country,as that would encompass all the others,and generally would give the consensus as how that country is viewed,my question is......What does the wrld think of a country that fiercely wants to protect it's image,culture and reputation but releases a driver (temporarily we are told) who,through speeding,kills a young girl on the road,nearly cut's her in half and all he has to do,is say sorry,the girl's family will be recompensed,will the payment be pro rata to the girl's family social standing in this country and who will work this out?will we be advised on that dreadful programme "pattaya new's" or will this,like so many other thing's be forgotten?

As much as I to enjoy seeing beautiful naked breasts, if the law and tradition and culture is for them to only be seen behind closed doors then possible hypocrisy, corruption, or not those responsible will have to face the consequences. Just because I come from a country and society that tolerates/encourages partial or full nudity on beaches and in some public places gives me no right to expect it to be acceoted and/or become the norm to other countries and cultures. To those responsible and who sought to profit from the actions and event, all I can say is, "som num na" (Thai for you get what you deserve). I think it's also important to understand, that even though the one incident may seem to many to be insignificant, to officials the idea of it becoming a common occurrence /tradition at Songkran and/or any time during the year must be far more disturbing, hence the need to take quick and decisive action.

And to all those people who write posts that Thailand is tolerant and there are not as many laws and restrictions on personal freedom, and that’s why they are here. Well...I suspect you have more personal freedom with regards to displaying your breasts in public back home than here. Personally I think there are just as many laws here, if not more, but its the liberal application and use of those laws when it suits those who apply them, without much consistency that gives the impression of more freedom. Not a criticism, just my personal freedom to voice my observation...or do I get a two thirds fine for observation...tricky.

Instead of the city authorities thinking topless female dancers is not following the Thai tradition of Songkran, they better ask themselves about the waste of water, the filth it generates, and the cost it takes to clean the Songkran areas up. (Heck, most local BKK Thais leave the city. The wild Songkran celebration certainly doesn't bring in revenue for the city.... oh, maybe for the vendors selling the plastic water guns made in China or the buckets of white paste.

ABAC Poll: Thai society deteriorating

BANGKOK, 18 April 2011 (NNT) – The recent news report regarding a group of half-naked young women splashing water on Silom Road in Bangkok reflects a deteriorating Thai society, according to a recent survey by Assumption University Research Center (ABAC Poll).

The survey was conducted with 1,134 respondents aged more than 18 years old in Bangkok and vicinities from 16 to 17 April 2011. The respondents were asked for their opinion about a group of young women enjoying Songkran in Silom with bare breasts.

94.3% of the respondents said they saw the news report, of whom 91.8% indicated that the Thai society had been deteriorating for a long time.

74.9% of the respondents said adults in the society had failed to provide good examples for young people while 71.7% pointed out that those young women misbehaved by themselves. 56.2% believed the criticized ladies had such a foul behaviour ever since they were in their families.

87.9% of the respondents expressed concerns over the future generation of the Thai society. 89.6% agreed that punishment for obscenity offenders should be harsher while 88.7% supported the same move for pornography distributors.

On the case of Silom girls, 83.7% of the respondents suggested that related authorities should be punished for allowing the scene to happen while 82.5% thought local administrative authorities responsible for the district where the incident took place should be punished too.

Will the police have more success in tracking down the perpetrators and abettors of this heinous crime than they have so far had in tracking down the murderers of lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit, the murderer of Kirsty Jones, the would be assassins of Yellow Shirt leader Sondhi Limtrakool etc, etc?

The boys in brown actually seem far more suited to this kind of work. They did a great job in nailing Nong Natt for making a porno film with a Japanese man and made sure she paid a substantial (and only partially receipted) fine for indecent exposure and that her legit modelling and soap opera career was cut short. They have also shown their mettle in catching Ukrainian hookers red handed and selflessly submitted their own semen in condoms as evidence of the women's crimes. I think we can guarantee a speedy outcome in this case, while the above mentioned murderers remain free to kill again and again at the behest of their well connected patrons.

This event may seem harmless enough, but this leads to other things and sooner or later becomes more extreme.

For example, in Britain young teens and thugs have practically taken over the streets and this is exactly how it all starts if rules are relaxed.

Boundaries need to be drawn otherwise it will lead to the demise of the whole of Thai culture, just as what has happened in the UK.

I agree whole-heartedly. I fully support the desire to get prostitutes off the streets, and pornography, and violent weapons.

you guys tend to forget that before Mr "anti-sanook" Purachai started his crusade against night clubs, you never saw any prostitutes on the sidewalks of sukhumvit as all the trade was taking place in discos until the wee hours.no illegal bars, no prostitutes, no 2.00am meat market at soi 4 were ever seen on the sidewalks before that. now this guy put the prostitutes in the streets right in the face of tourist famillies yet no one has complained against this .

Please note that when I arrived in thailand the first time back in 1992, it was in all the guides that it was a big no no for foreigners to walk around shirtless in bangkok, you would get fined.

now ok to fine the girls , thats the law , but stirring up the thing like this is way too much and will have the reverse effect , as it makes publicity about the incident. Funny how the bigots, not only thais, usually cause more damage to the image of their countries than the incident they denounce.

Just remind me how many people were killed over Songkran, how many buckets of water were thrown into the faces of motorcyclists causing a some to fall off, I know of one young girl that was killed in such an incident and people are causing such a fuss over these two young women having fun - pathetic.
