US Navy

This is a transcript of an ACTUAL radio communication between a U.S. NAVY ship and Canadian authorities off the cost of Newfoundland, October 1995. Radio log released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10/10/95:

CANADIANS: Please divert your course 15 degrees South to avoid collision.

AMERICANS: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees North to avoid a collision.

CANADIANS: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

AMERICANS: This is the captain of a U.S. Navy ship. I say again, divert.

CANADIANS: No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.

AMERICANS: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH. I SAY AGAIN, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES

WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

CANADIANS: This is a lighthouse . . . Your call.

Old and untrue. (And implausible in so many ways).

But I find it interesting how -- in many cases -- people WANT to believe it.

this did actually happen between US navy an Canadian lighthouse in October 1995 transcript an US ship nae in vid are incorrect(slightly) but same scenario

Maybe a fabrication....

but it still reads and watches well......

Not maybe, definitely a fabrication. It's kinda funy but for me it would only be truly funny if it were true. As I said, I'm more struck by how much people want it to be true, the glee with which they embrace it, and the sentiment behind that (it can even be seen with a glance at the comments on that Youtube -- by the way, I couldn't be bothered to wait for it to buffer: that's not supposed to be a real, is it?)

The joke goes back decades. Interestingly there's a version about rhe British in the 30s. Now let's see why would it be the British then, and the US now? Hmmm...couldn't have to do with resentment and jealousy of global power, could it? No, I guess not.

Think what a ridiculous idea it is: all those ships, all that technology and they don't know where the coast is and can't figire out who they are communicating with? They would have know a full day or more -- and had photographs as well as actually eyes on it from aircraft -- of anything potentially in their way.

And the commander of the whole operation -- a man with decades of experience and training etc an entrusted with HUGE responsibility - gets in an argument with some guy on the radio?

Update needed -- CHINESE Navy

Heh. It'll happen.

Sorry Boater. First of all i found the post by way of "New Posts" and didn't even realize it was in the jokes forum (didn't even know there was one). And I I just happen to have heard certain sort of folks repeating this joke over the years (and even on a recent occasion) and then vehemently defending it. And canard debunking is favorite pastime of mine anyway.

Anyway -- sorry bout that.

Maybe China and Taiwan, but it is a joke; just for all those that were offended. I sometimes think the joke section is the best reality on TV. :whistling: :jap: :blink::D :D

I doubt anyone was offended. I certainly wasn't.

Oh, it was funny, and I was not offended, but it is patently untrue.

I am not sure what is funnier, though, the joke itself or the people who defend it as being fact. :)

Heard that before. An oldie but a goodie. LOL, our Canadian buddies are always looking out for us and we can take a joke. :D

I know it aint true but sometimes I wonder if this sort of thing could just be.

Was sitting on the end of a wharf with a mate several years ago when a navy fisheries patrol boat came alongside.

An officer type appeared on deck and in the best of british accents asked "I say chaps could you tell me what the tide is doing"

He didnt get an answer we were both laughting so much.

And that one is true.

You must be a real joy at parties!

The idea of resentment over global power is something largely invented by yourselves to shield yourselves from the reality that most of the rest of the World don't look to America for hope or inspiration. Except our British Government, it seems... ;)

Apparently you and i go to different sorts of parties -- mine don't generally feature being amused at lame and puerile humor...well, maybe they do but not THIS lame or puerile, anyway.

Besides, you quote me out of context - I Am clearly discussing the fact that people often believe this to be an actual event (even on this thread!), not a joke and I am pointing out how ridiculous it is to believe it. If someone thinks it's a funny joke, then fair enough but if they are so lacking in critical/analytical skills (and/or enjoy US bashing so much) as to just believe whatever they read on the internet -- well then I think they are dumb and will say so.

As for your contention that (oft times justified) resentment of US global power (and its use) is mostly a US fabrication -- well, I think that's ridiculous and indicative of either ignorance of the facts (and I doubt you are ignorant of them) or intellectual dishonesty.

And who the hell claimed that the rest of the world looks to America for hope or inspiration, or should? Certainly not me.

(The British government, rightly or wrongly, aren't motivated by that pointless rhetoric but rather political and geo-strategic realities as they perceive them, self-interest, and perhaps some small bit of regard for the US as a nation even with all its many faults and transgressions).

Uh oh, this is the joke section and I'm not being a fun guy... better deploy some emoticons immediately biggrin.gifwink.gif...blink.gif

This one really did happen:

1964 was also the year the Royal Australian Navy experienced its worst peacetime maritime disaster when, on February the 10th, the destroyer HMAS Voyager would sink after being rammed by the aircraft carrier Melbourne during night exercises. 82 lives were lost aboard the Voyager, including the Captain and 13 other officers. The "George Cross" would be awarded posthumously to CPO Jonathon Rogers, DSM, for conspicuous bravery during the rescue operation.

Subsequent inquiries and Royal Commissions (held in 1964 and 1967) would eventually absolve the Melbourne of any wrong-doing, instead laying blame on the Voyager for not taking avoiding action and persisting on a collision course.

The ocean is a very big mass? Accidents do happen?

Sure accidents happen.

Two ships working relatively closely amongst many, at night, and using 1964 technology collide? Not implausible at all.

An aircraft carrier, three destroyers, numerous support vessels using 1995 technology nearly colliding with North America?

Not so much.
