Chinese Nationality For Thai Baby

Recommended Posts

Brother in law (Thai nationality) is getting married. Fiancé has a Thai ID card and everything, but didn't give up her Chinese nationality. If and when they have a child (yes, I'm kinda wondering why this comes up now :-)), is it legally possible to hold double nationality? And if so what steps are needed to be taken?

As far as I know, Thais are not allowed to hold a double citizenship (though obviously there are quiet a few that do), have no idea how things stand with regard to China.

If the child is born in Thailand, it will hold Thai nationality automatically since the mother is Thai. If born abroad, one needs to get a Thai birth certificate from the Thai embassy in that country.

Not sure if Chinese law allows double nationality. You can search the internet for "Chinese nationality Law" and you should get a hit on the English version of that law.
