KINSASHA, CONGO (BNO NEWS) -- At least 39 people have been reported dead after a boat capsized in a lake in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), officials said Monday.

According to reports, the boat, which was traveling from Minova to Bukavu, in the province of South Kivu, was reportedly carrying over 100 people when it capsized in DR Congo's Lake Kivu.

Emanuelle Mulinbwa, a communication counselor of South Kivu province told Xinhua news agency that search and rescue teams had found 39 bodies, as teams continue to work in the area.

Meanwhile, the ship's owner, Maneno Muzuka, said bad weather and high winds were linked to the accident.

In July 2010, more than 130 people were killed and others were left missing when a boat carrying around 250 passengers overturned on a river in the Bandunu province of the DR Congo.
