webfact
Indonesian Observers to Arrive After Cambodia Removes Troops The Thai Foreign Ministry says Indonesia is ready to send their observation team to the Thai-Cambodian border as soon as Cambodia removes its troops from the disputed area. Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya gave a phone interview after holding talks with the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Marty Natalegawa, who is also the Asean chairman. Kasit said he has talked with Marty about the details of the duties and responsibilities of the Indonesian observation team. Kasit said Indonesia will send its observation team to the Phreah Vihear Temple area as soon as Cambodia removes its troops. Moreover, Kasit explained the recent Thai-Cambodian battle to the Indonesia Foreign Minister, where he reiterated that Thailand will stick to bilateral talks to solve the problem. Kasit said Thailand has no reason to initiate violence, as the area is occupied mainly by Thai citizens. He said a battle would only cause losses for Thailand, more so than for Cambodia. He said the Indonesian observation team will arrive to observe the northern and southern part of the Phreah Vihear area, with 15 observers at each post. Kasit emphasized that Cambodia must remove all of its troops from the 4.6-square-kilometer area. Kasit said the Indonesian observer will remain in the disputed area for about six months, or until Cambodia agrees on a permanent ceasefire. He said Cambodia needs to stop the armed battle and turn to bilateral negotiations. He emphasized that Thailand does not want battles, but wants to negotiate peacefully. -- Tan Network 2011-04-
geovalin
"Kasit said the Indonesian observer will remain in the disputed area for about six months, or until Cambodia agrees on a permanent ceasefire. " Thailand refuses the permanent ceasefire wished by Cambodia last February. The main point of the Cambodian proposition at this time was to create a demilitarized zone in the area. Is Thailand ready for that?

Does Thailand have any troops in the disputed area and if so will these also be removed? All Thailand's troops are on Thai territory - according to the Thai army, the Thai government and Thais in general. It's just the rest of the world that is out of step. It's a pity that Cambodia is too small to knock some sense into the heads of the stupid Thais. But then that's probably the reason the Thais picked this quarrel. They'd never upset Burma this way. Thaddeus
I would have thought that one of the main reasons for having observers is to find out who is telling the truth and who is telling porkies.
TerraPosse
I would have thought that one of the main reasons for having observers is to find out who is telling the truth and who is telling porkies. Which would explain why one side is less than keen to see these observers deployed whilst the other one has been welcoming them from the start.
