Mingkwan, Chavalit's men to stay with Pheu Thai

By The Nation

The Pheu Thai Party said yesterday that its party-list MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan and the close aides of former party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh would stay with the opposition party.

Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit said yesterday the party leaders informed him that the Mingkwan and Chavalit factions will join the party meeting this week.

Pheu Thai would also be welcoming MPs from two to three parties including the Democrats as its members. They will formally announce their decisions from May 7-9 after the House is dissolved, he said.

Pheu Thai will hold a seminar to organise its MP slate for both constituency and proportionate voting. It will also appoint a secretary-general and deputy leaders after some deputy leaders stepped down.

Sources said that over the past week, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the party's string puller, tried to call Mingkwan and his supporters to persuade them not to desert the party but failed to get in touch with them.

Thaksin then asked one of party's senior figures to visit Mingkwan's home and they were able to clear up misunderstandings and differences, so Mingkwan and his followers decided to remain with Pheu Thai.

Border Situation Eases

The Region 2 Army has revealed that the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border has improved with Cambodian forces retreating back from the Ta Moan Thom and Ta Kwai temples in Surin province. The development occurred yesterday when Cambodian commanders contacted their Thai counterparts, asking to retrieve their dead and wounded out of the battle zone. They then retreated back onto Cambodian territory.

However, minor clashes were still heard in nearby areas, but Thai officials say they are not worried and will be deliberating today if locals will soon be allowed back into their homes.

Thai election body bans discussion of monarchy

BANGKOK, May 2, 2011 (AFP) - Thailand's poll authorities on Monday banned discussion of the revered monarchy in campaigning for the first national election since deadly political violence erupted last year.

Debate about the role of the royals is a long-standing taboo in Thailand, which is gearing up for what is expected to be a closely fought election, to be held by early July.

The Election Commission (EC) has yet to reveal the exact scope of the new rules, which were announced at a meeting Monday with representatives of political parties.

"The EC will discuss details of the ban later," said the body's chairman Apichart Sukananond, suggesting that parties who flout it may be dissolved and their executives banned for five years.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva voiced support for the ban, saying the monarchy was "above politics and conflicts," while the main opposition party Puea Thai pledged to respect the rules.

Other parties agreed to adhere to the ban, but some called for clarification of details such as whether the candidate or the whole party would be punished if the order was violated.

Insulting the monarchy is a serious offence in Thailand punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, widely revered as a demi-god by many Thais, has been hospitalised since September 2009.

The 83-year-old has no official political role but is seen as a unifying figure in a country that has been frequently riven by political violence, particularly since a military coup in 2006.

Thailand remains deeply divided a year after opposition rallies by the "Red Shirt" movement sparked violence which left more than 90 people dead in clashes between protesters and armed troops in Bangkok.

Some top Red Shirts have been accused of disloyalty to the crown.

On the instructions of its chief General Prayut Chan-O-Cha, the military last month filed a complaint against three "Red Shirt" leaders for allegedly insulting the monarchy during rally speeches.

He later said the army "will do its duty to protect the monarchy".

Many of the mainly working class Reds are loyal to fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted as prime minister in the 2006 military coup and lives overseas to avoid a jail term imposed in absentia for graft.

The army chief has pledged to abide by the results of the upcoming poll, but that has not dampened speculation about possible military intervention in a country that has seen 18 actual or attempted coups since 1932.
