Bid to extend Purple Line to Sai Noi intersection

By Watcharapong Thongrung

The Nation

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority plans to ask the consultant for the Purple Line mass transit system to study the possibility of extending the Bang SueBang Yai section to the Sai Noi intersection.

An MRTA source said yesterday that Nonthaburi Governor Wichien Puttiwinyu had requested the Transport Ministry to lengthen the route by 4.5 kilometres from Bang Yai to Sai Noi.

The feasibility study might take six months to complete, the source said.

The extra section and three stations are expected to cost Bt1 billlion.

The MRTA will have to ask the Cabinet for the budget if it decides to go ahead with the project.

On the Bang SueBang Yai route, 25 per cent of the project cost of more than Bt36 billion has been spent on civil work.

Progress has suffered from a labour shortage but the contractor promised that 300 workers would be hired this month and 600 next month.

The Bang Yai-Bang Sue stretch of the MRT Purple Line project is a 23kilometre elevated, heavyrail transit system with 16 elevated stations, a depot with an operationcontrol centre and four parkandride facilities.

Eight Thais hurt in bus crash

By The Star/ANN

Twenty-eight Thais had a nasty shock when the bus they were in crashed into a divider and landed on its side along Malaysia's North-South Expressway on Tuesday. The bus was heading to Hat Yai from Johor Baru in Malaysia.

A car also collided with the crashed bus but the driver of the car was not injured.

Three passengers were admitted to Seberang Jaya Hospital in Penang, while five others received outpatient treatment. It was learned that the 24-year-old driver escaped unhurt.

A passenger said the driver was speeding.

"The bus was driven in a zigzag manner," she said.

Passengers who escaped unscathed moved to another bus.

Ayub Yaakob, chief of Penang state police, said the case was being investigated.

Thailand Post launches lychee delivery service

BANGKOK, 5 May 2011 (NNT) – Thailand Post is offering lychee delivery service in order to help farmers distribute good quality lychee throughout the nation via its home delivery service, starting from Wednesday onwards.

According to Thailand Post President Anusra Jitmitraparp, lychee has been included in the menu of the postal food delivery service to increase distribution channels for lychee farmers while consumers can enjoy fresh lychee directly sent from farms.

Under the service, only good quality ‘Khom’ lychee planted in the central province of Samut Songkram province has been selected for delivery since this strain is known to be the queen of lychee with its superbly sweet and delicious taste.

Lychee can be ordered from now at all post offices. Orders can also be made by dialing Thailand Post hotline 1545, 02-982-8222 or www.postemart.com.
