Two day's ago had a young one fly into our house. Talk's a bit so more than likely an escaped pet. Have got it a large cage with bath, dry food, ect from the local pet shop and give it banana every day. No problem with it eating that. Seem's happy enough, and also Sh/tting load's. What I would like to ask is what other type of fruit or goodies they like to eat. Also how to look after them. Looked on the Internet but not much joy so any info would be helpful. Thank's in advance.

A Mynah bird - you lucky thing. We looked into getting one a little while ago, but ended up with a Jenday Conure instead. But you're welcome to the info. we found out about their dietary needs.

Mynahs have an iron storage disease so they need to have a certain type of diet. You can't feed them parrot food/pellets - only the soft bill/pelleted food for Mynahs - this is because this has a low iron content only. They also have no crop so you shouldn't give them seeds.

Their problem with iron also means you should only give them fruit that is not too acidic (high in Vitamin C which increases the absorption of iron from foods). Fruits such as limes, pineapple, oranges, lemon, grapefruit, pomelo, avocado and apricots shouldn't be given.

Don't give them RED meat either.

Give them fruits such as apples, water apples, pears, melons, grapes, bananas - make sure you get rid of seeds and pits before you feed them to the bird- and they're not worried if they don't get a lot of variety.

Fresh water, non-acidic fruit and Mynah bird pellets will keep it healthy.

Enjoy.

Thank's for that, good tip's on the fruit, it love's Banana's and the pellet's. Some night's we get large flies in the garden it go's crazy for them if they fly into the cage, so now I swat as many as I can and pass them through to him/her. Sorry but dont know about any other bird's, but will look up the one you ended up with. A week or so ago I would quite happily given it away but now it has become part of the family. Talk it doesn't stop. If anyone want's a bird that chatter's/mimic's get one. Thai, English, no problem to give you an example only took a day to learn to say "p/ss off Jar" that's the wife. The main reason it's not going.Tip they dont stop sh/tting.Just looked your bird up on the Internet very pretty. Enjoy.

I sure see a lot of people give them dragon fruit.

Is it true you have to split their tongues for them to be able to talk?

Wouldn't try the tongue bit unless you want a bloody great hole in your hand, Soft billed or not it's like a dagger just ask my dog. Edited by fredob43

Prior to this Post I always believed you were a reasonably intelligent and compassionate person.

No more.

What a totally stupid "question"!

Rather than make judgments why not just answer the question?

Or I can to somewhere else to look for intelligent life forms.

I can

INFER

from your comment that they can talk from birth.

Thanks for nothing.

Hill Mynahs are natural mimics, my neighbour has one which replicates his early morning smokers cough / throat clearing (something I could do without) plus various other common local sounds and bird calls.

There is no need to maim the poor creature to make it talk - it already suffers enough being confined for life in a small cage.

And before you ask, Red Whiskered Bulbuls do not sing better when they are blinded and it is not OK to eat Sharks Fin Soup "because the fins grow back".

If you have any additional questions about which creatures should be mutilated to increase your personal pleasure in some way, do feel free to ask.
