So Boater, i'll play devils advocate. It has'nt made the top 25 destinations right?.........well why on earth would it? For a start its filthy, be you talking about the land or the sea. I would suggest that outrageous flight costs, rip off taxis, filthy beaches and an almost constant smell of sewage under your as you ride around the island might be for starters. The icing on the cake would be in the form of horrically dangerous roads and filthy water to swim in due to being regularily pumped with untreated sewage. Power cuts and flooding has been dicussed at length already.

Why on earth would it be in the top tier of any list? The one think i would say is its a very poor reflection on the UK to prefer to live here. :D

Phi Phi at number 4!!

As voted for by sherman backpackers no doubt. Samui shouldn't be surprised though I wonder if the Bangkok Airways chairman will care to comment given his recent concern for the island. :bah:

Maybe the storm might be a blessing in discuise as most of ther crap has been washed away. I have been under the assumption thayt samui needs knocking down and re building.

They have already started modifying the drains also the storm caught allot of attnsuin from the media and the govement cannot ignore that which hopfully means that we get the funding to fix this place up properly.

Old building and roads have been washed away hopefully we can learn from mistakes

Maybe for example it is cheaper to bbuild a big shopping center for example tescos in lamui with no. Drainage but now look how much it has cost them

this is what i am trying to get to , not that it didnt make the list, but the fact the island needs to sort out its problems as you mentioned above so it CAN make the list... if you catch my drift

I see what you mean, because at the moment i'd be f_cking gobsmacked if it made the top 100.....especially what with it being such a "green" island now. The attention to address the green issues has been nothing short of pitiful. I think the local feeling must be that tourists will continue to come here no matter what, which is quite concerning baring in mind what a dump the place is becoming already.

after watching all those tourists / russians have to walk back and forth to the airport in the mud last month for three days with their bags only to be told it was closed , you mean someone still would want to go to samui ?

Just glad I last visited 10 years ago when nice bungalows on Chalong Beach could be had for B300-400 and there were great beach seafood barbaques at nite.

I am not going to dispute the many things stated that could substantially improve this islands' popularity.

But why all the credence given to TripAdvisor?

They are a part of the Expedia Inc group of companies, a US based and US Stock Exchange listed company. I am guessing the majority of their business is US based and a large part of any voting for destinations/resorts/beaches to be similarly weighted towards US voters. I don't hear that many Amercian accents on this island.

Now if Agoda, or some similar operation from Europe, or the Middle East were to have a similar survey, I would bet the result would be very much different.

when green peace arrive it is all over. doomed. it means that people busy bodies saying u cant do this u cant do that and they have come to the place due to attension because of serious envirmental issues. what green peace will do is out everythign and the place is doomed. this town will become a ghost town and bands won't play no more.

Wonder if you were 10 years ago already on the wrong island, since Samui doesn't have a Chalong beach. Thanks for your 2 cents input though!

not suprised, its a dump, can live there and never know you were on an island, only place i can think of where hotels built inbetween beach and road. is there a beach road any where. Pattaya area streets ahead, seem to see time after time putting right, to late the drains will always fill with sand/soil from the mountains where tree roots replaced by concrete, bad roads, expensive. as the big man used to say, its a Sh*t hole.

samui is a dump, the only upside is it actually makes people appreciate koh phangan all the more once they get there.

the majority of my renters who have spent spend a week on samui arrive in chaloklum and state they wish they had skipped samui entirely.

In fact I tend to largely agree although the overdevelopment of Thong Nai Pan holds out little hope there either.

Still some wonderful spots on both islands which won't change for a long while yet.

now we just need somebody to compile a list of very small islands in the middle of nowhere that have the largest groups of people that don't actually reside there who actively complain about it. i'm reasonably certain samui would make that top 25 list.

That must be the combination of didn't know that Chaweng is that commercialised, but paid for the booking already, later at chaloklum by chance, without knowing that there are better beaches on KPG as wellcustomers.

out of interest, had I not invested into Samui, I would be looking to get the <deleted> out of here

thing is where is a good alternative, I like Bangkok but don't want to live in a city, I like Phuket but not sure it's actually to busy for me, any suggestion?

people whine and moan about samui but we all come back. this might be as good as it gets. spend a couple of weks months years in london then u'll find samui one of the best places on this earth.

it has its faults but i has character. Infact what would we complain about if they fixed everything. we would not know what to do. the forum would be empty.

As for phuket it is just one thai to work for forang provence. yes u can get everything there and there are allot od malls and this and that but it is not much cheaper plus a bit of beach land would probably be the worst investment ever.

there are some new units well new in the fact that noone has moved into them yet but they have been there for about 2 years. unsold on the beach front in patong.

i mean who wants to buyt a house in a tsuami zone.

hotel . ok because u r turning money over every ight but units for offices or houses.

also there r more police in phuket and lady boys which is no for me
