Iran to examine Bahraini government crackdown on protesters

2011-05-07 07:35:05 GMT+7 (ICT)

TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Iran said on Friday it will look into the "crimes" committed during the government crackdown on protesters in Bahrain, Press TV reported.

Senior Iranian lawmaker, Mostafa Kavakebian, said Iranian officials will "thoroughly review the massacre of Bahraini people" by Bahraini and Saudi-led forces at a two-day meeting named the "Persian Gulf", which will be held in mid-May in the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas.

Members of Iran's Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission and Iranian Foreign Ministry officials will examine the recent developments in the Middle East, the security in the Persian Gulf, and other regional issues.

Iran has openly supported the social unrest that began in Bahrain after protesters called for a "Day of Rage" on February 14 to mark the 10th anniversary of the National Action Charter, which returned the country to constitutional rule after the 1990s uprisings.

Initially, people took to the streets to demand reform and the introduction of a constitutional monarchy, but later they began to call for the removal of the royal family, which has ruled the country for almost 40 years. Bahrain is ruled by the Sunni Muslim al-Khalifa family, but two-thirds of its population is Shiite.

In March, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait deployed their troops to Bahrain to reinforce a massive armed crackdown on the popular uprising. Scores of people have been allegedly killed, hundreds arrested and thousands injured in the government-authorized violence.
