In October 2010 when picking up an Avis car at Suvarnabhumi, I was requested to sign a document in which I had to - as far as I understood it - acknowledge to have to pay a penalty of up to 2.500.000 THB in case I had an accident without a third party being involved, although I had purchased a full insurance package and the car's value - a Toyota Vios - was IMHO only a fraction of that amount.

Has anyone else had this happen to them, and does anyone know whether they still request this document?

This shows that car rental in Thailand, even through an international company like Avis, is a joke, many require cash deposits of 20,000 baht.

I have used Highway Car rent, they have offices on Sathorn Road & Sukhumvit, they only required a 2,000 baht deposit, and the liability was 2,000 per incident irrelevent if have 3rd party or not and terms and conditions printed in English, the only other liability was 80,000 if the car was stolen, and Toyota Vios was 800 baht per day,

Do you always sign this (i don't really know what i am doing) sort of documents?

I think this is strange.

In the terms and conditions as stated on the AVIS Thailand website there is nothing mentioned about any requirement of this document.

I think i would refuse to sign it and refer to their own terms and conditions.

Signing a 2.5 Mm THB claim for a 700.000 Baht car sounds a good deal for AVIS. :D

I've used Avis five or six times this year and have not signed a document like this. You do have to pay a 20,000 deposit and this is returned after the rental (although the refund can take a couple of weeks). I took up the accident damage waiver, which costs around 150-200 THB extra depending on length of rental - and this means that you don''t have to pay anyting in the event of an accident.

I tested this when I returned an Altis minus the front bumper and right headlight (oops!) and I did not have to pay anything.

I've had good service from Avis and Budget so far .... been using them for a couple of years. One thing to note is that base spec cars in Thailand do not generally have ABS - so i'd recommend you go for a mid range Civic or Altis to get ABS and airbags. (Also watch out for reversing trucks!)

To avoid misunderstandings, I've been renting Avis cars for 20 years in different countries, and have always been a very happy customer, including in Thailand.

It is just that if you buy an insurance and later accept liability for something without prior consent from the insurance, usually this is not allowed by the conditions of the insurance. So, but signing such a document, I might jeopardize my insurance coverage.

Hence I'd like to find out whether this document is still being requested, and how others have dealt with this.

That said, the fact that nobody here seems to have been presented with this document makes me think that probably it is no longer requested.
