Folks ...... I really would like to move all my books and other bits out to Thailand but of course excess baggage is a very expensive way to do it . My best efforts have taken me to a company called VOOVIT who are quoting me about £200 to take four suitcases weighing 30 kg each from London to Bangkok . This seems a good deal . £1.70 a kilogramme !

But has anybody dealt with this company ? Can anybody recommend them .... or warn against them ? And has anyone got other suggestions that they know work --- or any warnings ? !!!

Thanks and good wishes . Wasp .

I used Voovit a couple of years ago to send 6 x 30kg boxes with things like hi-fi, CD's, tools (hand & electric), m/cycle clothing etc and had no problem with their service, and price but they only handled the collection of the boxes from my house in the UK (including supplying empty boxes/ tape etc), and shipping to Laem Chabang port. I then had to deal with the Thai shipping agent and pay money for the handling & customs documentation & release in Thailand (this was a little more problematic/ expensive - i.e. getting them to give me a fixed price, and justifying it before I transferred them any money), and I collected my boxes in person. This ended up costing nearly as much as getting them from London to Laem Chabang via Liverpool!! Just checked my invoices, Voovit costs 266quid, Thai shipping agent costs 6899Baht (140 quid), customs duty 2897Baht (59quid). depending on what you send you may not have to pay duty - although my stuff was down as 'used household goods' which it was!

Let me know if you need any more info, blank forms etc etc

To TREVORG .

Blimey !!! Those costs take it from £1.70 a kilo to £2.60 a kilo !!! Still not too bad I suppose - but when they said BANGKOK I thought it was to an address in Bangkok . Obviously they mean to the port and then there's the hassle that you had to put up with plus those costs . Is it worth it ? I have my doubts now . For high-cost things like your motorbike leathers it must be worth it ..... but for my books and DVDs probably not . Thank you for the information Trev .

No worries, as you say, it depends on what you think you need in Thailand, what it would cost to replace said items with equivalent quality (if available) and what you would like with you for 'sentimental' reasons.

I did ship all my CD's (I DJ a bit as a hobby) & DVD's -over 700 (out of their 'hard cases' in 'Case Logic' CD wallets - I spent hours cutting out track lists from the case labels and arranging them prior to packing. Would have saved shipping costs, but taken a while to rip them all and bring as mp3's on a hard drive in your hand luggage!

Bringing my 350 quid 24V De Walt Hammer Drill has proved invaluable and my leathers/boots/helmets (though a bit warm in this climate), PS3 CDJ decks etc. I also brought some old photo albums, 1000 slides and projector - which again like the CD's/ DVD's - if I'd spent the time could be digitised. But there's nothing like actually having the stuff in your hand!

If I'd had to actually replace it all with new then it was probably 20+k's worth - so 450quid doesn't seem so much! I also didn't have anywhere to store stuff in the UK to bring over bit by bit and I couldn't imagine having to give or even worse throw more stuff away, which I had to do with all my furniture & appliances!

I look around and there are many books I simply want to have there but which I would not go looking for in "The Mall" . Books that I would certainly one day read . Big heavy books . And great movies that I want to have on my shelf for whistful evenings . The movies could probably travel with me and I don't even mind replacing my tools . So it's just books . It's difficult and costly to get them through Amazon too ! Well ...... maybe I should search Bangkok for a decent quality second-hand bookshop and give these to a Charity shop . Thank you for the time .

I have shipped about 100-200kg with Superoo.net. every year. I think it is not necessarily for personal possessions but I have shipped personal items along with items for sale. Cost about 100B a kilo. They send it by plane every sat, and its ready for collection on the sun in BKK. Try also a company www.omega-movers.com.

I shipped 4 large boxes each around 3o kg from a Hull shipping company tele 01482 877078, cost me 100 pound but I delivered the boxes to the shipper. When they arrived at customs clearance in BKK I took a taxi driver who had a little English to help me, had to go to several offices to get various stamps but there was no charge for anything, dont know if I just got lucky , this was eighteen months ago. Good luck

I looked into this when I moved here, but decided that dealing with customs and shipping agents would be fraught with risk.

Do you have many people come on over to see you?

I've a few friends who come and go, and they never mind bringing 5 or 6 kgs of stuff when they do. Over a course of 2 years, I've now managed to get almost everything that I wanted over, plus a good few Amazon purchases on top. It's like having a little Christmas every time they get over too.

Good luck. B)

I am looking to do this from UAE to Thailand, by air. So I presume one has to receive the items at the Suwannaphum customs department. Has anyone dealt with them before? My items are houshold, but I also have quite a few model trains...would they be dutied???

I had a computer "die" on me so I haven't seen these replies . So thank you to ............ skinnymilinky , meatboy , ableguy and Tom Kagai . But no - I don't have anybody visiting . I'm the original Nobby Nomates . If I lived in Pattaya it would be different but nobody wants to visit Korat . Which is a shame . I think it's fine ! I looked at Superoo but they seem to have evaporated . And if I ask you people for help I really should listen to you and I'm starting to accept that there's probably more hassle and expense than it's worth . Thanks again folks . from Wasp .

Thanks meatboy . I'm not actually living in Korat yet . We have a house outside Korat - near Nonthai . Is that anywhere near you ? We're still based in UK and spending Winter in Korat but this year I think we're making the big final move . And when I look around the only things I want to move are my books . but they are heavy . My tools would be handy but then again none of them are new so I don't mind buying new stuff in Korat . Everything else is approaching the end ( Old car old sofa etc. ) . But the dam_n books are heavy .

So maybe we'll catch up and have a cold Leo sometime ?
