Iran calls for more aid for Afghan refugees

2011-05-13 04:00:06 GMT+7 (ICT)

TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) -- The Iranian Interior Ministry's Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants Affairs (BAFIA) urged the international community to increase aid donations for Afghan refugees, Press TV reported on Thursday.

BAFIA Director General Mohammad Tahavori said after a trilateral meeting of officials from Iran, Afghanistan and the United Nations on Afghanistan in the Afghan capital of Kabul that the current donations by international bodies to Afghan refugees did not meet their needs.

Nearly three million Afghans are living in Iran legally or illegally, but the Islamic Republic has received little international support. The Iranian government has called on the international community to strengthen support to Iran for hosting Afghan refugees and provide repatriation support for the refugees.

According to Iran, voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from Iran has slowed in recent years due to the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.
