Right-wing extremists attack immigrants in Athens protest

ATHENS, GREECE (BNO NEWS) -- More than 12 people were injured on Thursday after right-wing extremists chased and attacked immigrants during a protest in the Greek capital, the Kathimerini newspaper reported.

Suspected members of extreme-right organizations chased groups of immigrants and threw Molotov cocktails at police officers in Athens, after hundreds of protesters gathered at the spot where a 44-year-old man was fatally stabbed on Tuesday. The far-rightists believe immigrants were behind the murder.

Groups of right wing extremists also gathered in the area on Tuesday, after the fatal stabbing of the man who had been preparing to take his pregnant wife to hospital. He was then attacked by assailants who stole his video camera in a neighborhood with a large migrant population.

Police were also investigating the fatal stabbing in the same area of a 21-year-old Bangladeshi man early Thursday, but they did not say that the attack was racially motivated.

In a written statement issued on Wednesday, Prime Minister George Papandreou condemned the murder and vowed to improve safety for city dwellers. Meanwhile, Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis expressed his fear that Athens would soon resemble Beirut in the 1970s if immediate action is not taken.

Greece is currently struggling to contain a wave of illegal immigration. Human rights organizations calculate that there are around 500,000 illegal immigrants currently living in the country.

Is Greece vying for the euro faciast lout tourist trade now?

Who said they were tourists? I think half a million illegal immigrants is also a frightening number in a Country with a population of 11.3 million (2009). Pro-rata this would be like the U.S having 15 million illegal immigrants.

Umm a quick google search shows;

- The US Border Patrol union Local 2544 in Tucson, Ariz., says the total number of illegal immigrants in the US today is between 12 million and 15 million.

- The Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research organization in Washington, estimates 11.5 million to 12 million "unauthorized migrants" live in the US today. It bases its numbers on the "Current Population Survey," a monthly assessment of about 50,000 households jointly conducted by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau.

- US Homeland security comes up with the nice politically correct estimate of 10.9million

And yet no mass riots directed at the illegals in the USA. Australia and Canada have a similar burden and no one is rioting.

If your premise is that the Greeks are unruly and militant I would have to agree with you. It is interesting the illegal immigrant estimate for the U.S as I didn't know, the figures are not that surprising mind you.

Greece is also a gateway Country to Africa and Eastern Europe so any clash of civilisations will take place here more so than in the U.S where the neighbouring civilisation is Latin which though different to western civilisation is less so than western civilisation is to Islam - Here is the difference for Europe as oppose to the U.S.

This is sad news. Greece is a country where the anti-fascist movement is still strong (ie. mainly of anarchist nature).

I hope that Greek anarchists and other anti-fascists will teach these fascists a lesson in the near future.
