IMF to remain 'fully operational' after Strauss-Kahn arrested in New York

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Sunday said it will remain 'fully operational' despite the highly controversial arrest of its managing director in New York.

IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn previously served as France's Finance and Economy Minister between June 1997 and November 1999. He is also seen as a possible presidential candidate in next year's presidential elections in France.

According to the allegations, Strauss-Kahn forced a hotel maid at the Sofitel New York Hotel to perform oral sex on him before attempting to rape her. Police have since charged the politician with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, and unlawful imprisonment. One of his lawyers said Strauss-Kahn expects to plead not guilty.

In response to the arrest, which rocked France at its core, the IMF said it would remain 'fully functioning and operational.' "Mr. Strauss-Kahn has retained legal counsel, and the IMF has no comment on the case; all inquiries will be referred to his personal lawyer and to the local authorities," said Caroline Atkinson, Director of External Relations at the IMF.

As Strauss-Kahn remains in police custody in New York, the IMF has appointed John Lipsky as Acting Managing Director.
