KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 11 people were killed and scores were injured after protests in northern Afghanistan against NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) attacks turned violent, officials said Wednesday.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 protesters gathered in Taloqan, the capital of Afghanistan's northeastern Takhar province, in protest against the attacks, but shots were fired when clashes broke out between security forces and protesters. Reports indicate that at least 50 people were injured during the clashes, while some reports say up to 80.

According to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the NATO-led raid late Tuesday night targeted an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator and resulted in the death of four insurgents, including two armed females, but protesters say they were innocent civilians.
