RAIPUR, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- Seven paramilitary soldiers were killed on Tuesday evening in a landmine attack by Maoist militants in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, Press Trust of India reported.

The rebels triggered a landmine blast on a patch connecting Sukma and Keralapal areas of the Dantewada district, blowing off a car carrying a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) team. Five troopers were killed on the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in a hospital.

According to police officials, the CRPF team had gone to Keralapal area to identify place for setting up new barracks for them, after the Supreme Court ordered security forces in Chhattisgarh to vacate all school buildings, educational institutes and hostels by May 18.

More than one-third of India's 626 administrative districts are affected by the Maoist insurgency. At least 1,170 rebels, troops and civilians were killed in insurgency-related incidents in 2010.

The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of tribal, landless and poor people in the country's poorest regions.
