It can take that long just mailing within the UK, in some areas they're only delivering the mail every two days from what I've heard.

For some strange reason the old fashioned post seemed to be faster than the modern version. I handed a letter to a hotel clerk in Sakhon Nakhon who then phoned someone. Within a few minutes a guy came by and took my letter. It was mailed and delivered to a rual address in Sakhon Nakhon the same day.
