Four separatists killed in a gunfight with security forces in Yala's Than To district on Friday were wanted by police for several serious crimes, the commissioner of a special task force unit told a press conference yesterday

There were 28 arrest warrants for key "militant" Ma-ae Aphibalbae, who was suspected of being involved in the murder of former Bannang Sata police chief Sompien Eksomya.

Meanwhile, Yala governor Krisada Boonrat said yesterday he temporarily suspended assistant village headman Madari Mula from work after he was accused of harbouring Ma-ae and colleagues. Madari was being questioned at the Southern Border Provinces' Police Centre, he said.

Maj-General Preecha Chanocha told the press conference that, after a tip-off that suspected insurgents were hiding in Cha Ror Pae Village Moo 3 in Than To district, a combined security force went to investigate but the insurgents opened fire on them first, prompting government forces to return fire.

All four suspects were killed during a 10-minute gunfight. After, officials seized two AK-47 rifles, a pistol and nine mobile phones.

The militants killed were identified as Mazobri Azu, 29, Asae Hulu, 30, Mustopa Naelulae, 34, and Ma-ae Aphibalbae, 34.

The latter was allegedly involved in several attacks and assassinations of several senior government officials, Preecha said. It was suspected that Ma-ae, who was believed to be at the command level, was planning another deadly attack in the area.

Officials in the region were told to beef up security for teachers and Buddhists as insurgents might seek revenge for the four men, he said.

Ma-ae was on the wanted list for high-profile killings in Yala, including the murder of Colonel Sutthisak Prasertsi, a Yala special task force commander, on August 26, 2006 and the Hat Yai-Betong passenger van shooting, in which eight people were killed on March 14, 2007.

He was also wanted for a bomb attack that killed 11 military rangers on a pickup on the Yala-Betong Road in May 31, 2007. On March 12 last year, he allegedly led a bomb attack on a pickup truck in which Pol Colonel Sompien was killed in Bannang Sata district.

In related news, national police chief General Wichean Potephosree said yesterday that three out of 50 people on the updated blacklist of gunmen had been caught or killed. That included Ma-ae, who was ranked number 43 and wanted for many cases, including the murder of Colonel Sompien. The two others were Udomsak "Khomsan Phrasaeng" Sena, 34, who was wanted for a shooting in Krabi, and Wutthichai Maspan, 24, who was sought for a shooting on Koh Pha-ngan, he said.

Has the Thai military ever heard of the the Lernaean Hydra ?

http://en.wikipedia..../Lernaean_Hydra

And what is your proposed tactics? Appeasement?

And the allegory to a hydra is severly flawed...the number of insurgents are clearly finite. Kill enough and no more will be left.

Not flawed at all just look at population statistics, they breed faster than they are being eliminated. Indeed this is true of the entire Islamic world.

Appeasement definitely does not work, they see that as weakness. I favour oral contraceptives in the drinking water
