EC urged to probe spending by Puea Thai Party on election campaign.

BANGKOK, May 22 - As campaigns for a general election in Thailand is becoming more fierce, the outgoing ruling Democrat Party today urged the Election Commission (EC) to probe into election campaign spending by the major opposition Puea Thai Party.

The request was made by Warong Dechgitvikrom, deputy spokesman of the Democrat Party, who noted that the opposition party is in fact the same group as the anti-government protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

Several UDD leading members are standing under the party list of Puea Thai Party in the general election which will be held July 3.

Urging EC to probe into spending account of Puea Thai Party, Mr Warong also asked EC officials to carefully look into UDD activities which might help in canvassing for votes for the party. He said this would prevent other political parties from holding rallies to garner votes from eligible voters.

Political parties are now racing to campaign and UDD members have been accused of creating disturbances wherever Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, goes to visit people and seek their votes.

Top UDD member Natthawut Saikuea who is also running in the election under the Puea Thai's party list, said he believed UDD protesters are still unhappy with Mr Abhisit following the military operation to retake the UDD protest site at Ratchaprasong in the capital in May last year and. that is why they are harassing the premier during his campaign.

Mr Natthawut said he had talked to UDD acting chairwoman Thida Thavornseth to ask UDD members to stop such practices as the election process was proceeding. (MCOT online news).
