NEW DELHI (BNO NEWS) -- At least 17 people were killed on Sunday when an express train crashed into a crowded jeep in eastern India, the Times of India reported.

The accident took place when the jeep was hit by the speeding train at an unmanned railway crossing in Bihar state's Madhubani district. The victims were on their way to participate in the victory procession of a candidate who was elected as the head of a local village.

"Right now, I can see 17 bodies lying on the railway track", senior police official Saurabh Kumar said.

Among the victims, there were 16 women. Five more jeep passengers who were badly injured in the accident were admitted to a local hospital.
