MADIUN, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 9 people were killed in Indonesia's Java island after a small passenger bus crashed with a truck on Sunday evening, officials said Monday.

A bus operated by Sumber Kencono was traveling from Madiun to Surabaya, in the province of East Java, when it collided with an oncoming truck in the Pajaran village, Saradan sub district of Madiun, local officials told Antara news agency.

Madiun Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Nanang Juni Mawanto confirmed the accident, saying casualties included seven passengers, a driver, and the assistant bus driver.

According to a local witness, the bus was trying to avoid crashing into a motorcyclist when it collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction.

The fatal victims were transported to Caruban Regional Public Hospital in Madiun, while the injured were rushed to Nganjuk Regional Public Hospital.
