COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (BNO NEWS) -- Thousands of garment factory workers on Tuesday protested against the Sri Lankan government's proposed pension scheme for the private sector, the Colombo Page reported.

Several trade unions in the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) staged a massive protest at the airport junction on the main Katunayake-Colombo Road, causing a massive traffic block in the area.

According to the Sunday Times newspaper, the police fired tear gas to disperse the peaceful protesters. Anton Marcus, a FTZ member, said that the police action was aimed at a few protesters who were waiting at bus halts to catch a ride home.

An estimated 25,000 workers attended the protest, which was organized by 26 trade unions affiliated to the private sector.
