Two Indonesian police officers killed in suspected terror attack

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) -- Two police officers were killed on Wednesday in a suspected terror attack in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province, authorities said.

The Jakarta Globe reported that Second Brigs. Gustiar Yudistira and Andi Ibrar were gunned down by unidentified assailants on motorcycles in the province's capital, Palu. A third officer, Second Brig. Dedi Edwar, is in the hospital after receiving a gunshot wound.

Sr. Comr. Ari Diono Sukmanto, the province's deputy police chief, said the victims were assigned to a guard post near a Bank Central Asia branch, but he said police had ruled out a robbery attempt. He said one of the gunman stole an assault rifle belonging to one of the victims before fleeing with the three other suspects.

"We are pretty sure that what happened was a terrorist attack," a source from the National Police's elite anti-terror unit told the Jakarta Globe. "[Terrorists] want revenge and attack our officers."

Around 1,000 people were killed between 2001-02 in sectarian clashes between Muslims and Christians in Palu. Sporadic violence has continued to flare up in the area despite a truce in 2002.
