My wife went to the Amphur offices at Saraphee this morning to register to vote in the upcoming election. Although we've been living in Chiang Mai for quite a long time, her Tabien Ban is still from her previous address in Surin and in order to vote she has to notify the Amphur where we now live before June 2nd.

She's convinced that the government is not making stuff like this as public as it should in the hope of a low turnout, but whatever the reason I thought it may be helpful to anyone here with a friend or partner from outside Chiang Mai to know before it's too late.

It was quick and easy (although even people in the same building didn't seem to know which office was dealing with it) and she needed:

• Her Tabien Ban + a copy (signed of course)
• A copy of her ID card

In an amazing feat of computerisation it seems that those whose Tabien Ban is not available can ask to have their bona fides checked on that new fangled internet thingy. Apparently, out of Changwat voters get to go to the polls a few days earlier than the locals - the date she was given is June 26th.

Out of curiosity, will such a vote count for the Chiang Mai district or the original one, in this case in Surin?
