Four dead after oil refinery blast in western Wales

2011-06-03 21:05:36 GMT+7 (ICT)

PEMBROKE, WALES (BNO NEWS) -- An explosion on Thursday killed at least four people at Chevron oil refinery in western Wales, Dyfed Powys Police Chief Superintendent Gwyn Chief informed on Friday.

The blast occurred at about 6:22 p.m. local time at Pembroke Dock, Dyfed. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were rushed to the site in order to control the fire that followed the explosion.

"Crews from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue assisted the onsite Chevron fire personnel throughout the operation," said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Chris Davies. "The fire itself was extinguished quickly and the crews worked to make the scene safe for police to start their investigation."

Paramedics confirmed that four people died in the incident at the Chevron oil refinery, the fourth largest in the United Kingdom. The explosion occurred in a 730 cubic meters storage tank.

At the moment of the incident, workers were carrying out maintenance work at the storage tank. In addition an adjacent storage facility was damaged in the blast. Police ruled the explosion as a 'tragic industrial incident'.

Police officers cordoned off the area and a multi agency investigation into the cause of the explosion was launched. Any material released into the atmosphere as a result of the blast was immediately dispersed by the wind.

The refinery was formerly known as Texaco, later rebranded as Chevron-Texaco and known as Chevron since 2005. The facility was designed to refine up to 220,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
