I do have another post going, but have narrowed down my search to a quad band, so that I can access True 3g as I learn more about this smart phone new and confusing technolpgy and the way too many options and considerations for a dummie that has been satisfied with a cheap Nokia that only talks and texts.

Also would like to have at least a 5mp camera [flash and video,a plus]

GPS would be a plus as well.

Reliability, support and userfriendliness is a big plus.

Any suggestions for 10,000thb price range??

thanks in advance....

Quad-band GSM? 850/900/1800/1900 for voice and 2G (GPRS/EDGE) data. Most 10k phones have this spec.

and/or

Quad-band 3G? 850/900/1900/2100 Mhz believe only some Nokia models N8, C7 and iPhone 3/4 have this spec.

If you want True 3G then you need 850 Mhz 3G

HTC Wildfire S seems to have 850 Mhz 3G.

WellCoM A99 is 9,900 ~ 10,990.

Still not a lot of smartphones here with 850 Mhz.

Not sure why you need a new thread? Maybe just use the old one, have this one merged?

Hi JD- hope I'm not hijacking your thread... I got nothing to offer except that I'm looking for precisely the same thing as you.

However, a big factor in my choice will be screen size / resolution. When I look at the examples from lomatopo above, they are quite different. Wellcom is 800 x 480(4.1") and the HTC is 320x480 Pixels (3.2"). All of the phones I look at are different. Are there any "Industry standard sizes" ?

I believe this might be an important factor for many people, as I have read in other places that a small screen might be inconvenient - touch keyboards too small to use. I'm actually interested in the smallest screen possible, width-wise, so that the phone is small and comfortable to hold and carry in a pocket. Anyone have any experience or knowledge as to what is the smallest screen available?

Posted (edited)

Price generally dictates screen size/quality.

That WellcoM A99 is a local version of the Huawei u9000 ideos x6, so since nearly direct from an assembler and little overhead (marketing, supprot. etc.) perhaps an aberration.

You should obviously use any model you might be considering before purchase.

Broadly speaking 3" - 3.25" is lower end, 3.5 - 4.0 is higher end.

Lomatopo.....The 2 models you suggest, Wellcom and HTC are relitavely new here and should I be suspicious about the quality/reliability??

And looking at the True 3g coverage map of the CM area, I'm located on the fringe of the cloud and wondering if that will be an issue?/ and can we expect True to be 'true' to us in their expantion projections for the future??

I have decided that I don't like touch screen phones. Unfortunately high quality phones with no touch screen are now few and far between. I bought a Nokia E52 and am very impressed with it, especially the battery life. It does everything smart phones do. The built in GPS is as good as any smart phone but that isn't very good. The very good ESRI Thailand map supposedly can be used but I have not bothered to try to install it. The free Nokia map can be used in an emergency. The camera is 3.2 MP and the flash is weak, but it takes excellent pictures. My last holiday I didn't even bother to take my dedicated Sony camera. The auto screen rotation can be turned off. I do like the auto rotation and am able to turn it on only when wanted.

You should, Gary A.

I've installed Garmin Mobile XT and Thailand Street Map version 11.1 on my friend's E52.

It's great, believe me.

I already have a Garmin Etrex Legend CX, a GMAP 60 CX, a Nuvi 750 and a Nuvi 855. Any of them are much better than a GPS phone. I do like my gadgets except for the LG touch screen smart phone that stays in a drawer. I actually bought the E52 because my E51 got wet and had problems.

Maybe one of these days if I get bored, I'll try to put the ESRI map on the Nokia. I doubt that I would use it but it would be nice to have it on the phone.

Today, I looked at all the Samsung offerings and decided, but didn't purchase yet on the Samsung galaxy Cooper @ 8,900. Any comments or reviews on this AKA Samsung Galaxy Ace/Cooper S5830 @ 8,900thb

http://www.all-samsungphones.com/samsung-galaxy-acecooper-s5830-review.html/

lomatopo.....this seems like more of a phone than those no name 'wellcom' phones

Oy vey. I did recommend the Samsung Cooper in your other thread but then in this thread you said you wanted to use True 3G. The Samsung Cooper will NOT work on True 3G; it will work on AIS/TOT. Maybe you could re-focus on your core requirements? Or just buy the shiniest thing you saw most recently?

Lomatopo, I was assured that the cooper was quad band and would handle true.....but further investiagaion reveals that true 3g is not available in my area....so I'm open to other options.DETAC,but not AIs, as the AIS signal is mostly down here in my area. Is the cooper not quad band?? [they told me it was] And true 850mghrts??

What I am seeking is an international phone [unlocked] with versitility and able to function in the Philippines, as I am maintaining a dual residence....Thai and Phil.

Bought a Nokia X6 each for me and wifey about 8 months ago ..small, light and very pleased with all functions ..great sound from MP3 player and pretty good 5mb camera with excellent flash which doubles as flashlight..don't have GPS or WLAN ( would have been nice) capability and since seen lots of similar sized units with these features ...but still happy happy and for less than 4k baht!! Dropped it a few times and it still keeps on ticking.

.....pity no one ever phones me though....

Coppied from specs on the 'cooper'.....

Cellular-Networks: GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS2100

Cellular:Data:Links: CSD, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA

This is quad band, right? and 3g capable?? and what I would want while traveling between Thailand and Phil. Is this as versitle as I can get [with open sim card, for sure]??

And has anyone seen this model for less than 8,900thb??

I could have saved a couple of thousand thb with the 'mini' or another cheaper samsung, but screen size is a major issue for someone @ my age with failing eyes.

Sorry if these are dummie questions, but this will be my first smartphone and I admit that I am a dummie.

Which service provider do you use in the Philippines? Do you use mobile data in the Philippines? If yes, GSM data (2G:GPRS/EDGE)? 3G? (This Philippine requirement is a new one; you hadn't mentioned that previously.)

The Samsung Cooper supports GSM VOICE calling on four bands: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.

The Samsung Cooper supports GSM DATA (2G: GPRS/EDGE, lower speeds like 175 Kbps down) on four bands: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.

The Samsung Cooper supports MOBILE BROADBAND (3G: higher speeds like 2.5 Mbps down) on two bands: 900/2100 MHz. (so it would work on AIS and TOT; not sure about 3G in the Philippines)

http://www.thaimobilecenter.com/spec/Samsung_Galaxy_Cooper_S5830.asp?str_ad=y

In a competitive market you may be able to get this model for 8,500.

OOps, I spoke too soon......another site tells me that Phil has two 3g networks 'HSDPA 900 / 2100'.....so how many band do you need for an international [sE Asia] phone?? What is HSDPA?

dummie wanting to have smart phone.....

Lomo.....I admitted in the beginning that I was a dummie and this will be my first smart phone, so please forgive my ignorance and cut me a little slack.

In answer to your question 'Which service provider do you use in the Philippines?' ....I usually pick up their 'Smart Buddy' sim for voice and txt only and they have lousy service and a short shelf life....expiring usually before I return in 6 months. and am open to trying their many offerings to see which one works best in my travels there. They also have Globe, Sun and a couple of others and all have the same gimicks [ads, promos etc] that Thai networks have....maybe more.

Advise from some on the ground there is to have a couple of sims at least to make shre that you get the best signal depending on where you are and that sounds like good advise. i do the same here.....AIS, True, and DTAC, because all are not created equal or consistant in their coverage and never fulfill their promises.

It seems that the 'Cooper' AKA 'ace' will suit my needs in both countries for now and I have been comparing prices here @ 8,500thb and they run cheaper than both the Phil and even Amazon.com ......

'Do you use mobile data in the Philippines?' not yet, as mentioned above, I have only had a talk and txt phone and only now making the big jump to smart phones.

Is that enough English for you??

Lomatopo - if it is any consolation, I'm still following this thread, and grateful for your sage advice, understanding all of it. You really seem to know your sh*t about these gadgets.

I'm sorely tempted by the Wellcom A99. My big concern was the lack of information available in English... how to "root" the phone for example. Most of what I can turn up by searching is Thai. however, searching for Huawei u9000 ideos x6 finds lots of useful info.

Are there any other pitfalls that you can envision?

JD- I was initially excited by the Cooper that you are interested in / posted the link about, but it truly doesn't support TRUE 3G. The salesman wasn't exactly lying to you when he assured you that it supports 850, but he wasn't being totally straight either. From the specs you posted before,

Cellular-Networks: GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS2100

You need one that has UTMS850 if you want TRUE 3G. Of course the phone will work through TRUE GSM850, but won't be fast. So- if you're still interested in the Samsung, make sure you can accept that limitation!

What are your 3G requirements, if any?

If True 3G is not required maybe go for the Samsung Galaxy SL, more mainstream re: developer support and close to the A99 in price. The A99 is a daring choice; not sure I'd go for it unless I had a geeky Thai friend who could sort through the local details. I assume you could apply any ideos software to the A99? But downward price pressure, as a result of these new models (portable HD TVs essentially), means that in 30 - 60 days you'll be able to get a previously top-end model for a mid-range price. If developer support is important stick to a high-volume model; just look at the forums on xda to get a feel for developer activity.

Posted (edited)

Definitely leaning toward TRUE 3G since they seem to have the best coverage in Bangkok, and because I'm already a TRUE customer. Also - being a Canadian, I'd like the phone to work during trips home, and it seems that 850 is the standard there.

None of these are absolute "requirements" though.

I do have techie Thai employees / friends and I'm not a technophobe, but if the hassle is avoidable why go looking for it, right? I just might take your good advice and wait another month - add a little bit more "disposable income" from another paycheck, and wait for prices to come down as you mentioned.

Much obliged.

Really? Perhaps when you contribute as much and as often, you will appreciate how frustrating it can be when trying to glean requisite information in order to help.

So, since in this case you are not contributing but receiving, perhaps you should hold your tongue.

Don't mean it to sound harsh, but I'm sure if the shoe was on the other foot that you would have a clearer understanding. ;)

Please don't get me wrong, there is a lot of useful information - and I am appreciative of that.

You are also aware that those with the knowledge are usually very constructive in providing it to others. I have tried to do so in the few areas of my expertise !

There is nothing that makes a dummy feel worse than someone making them feel more of a dummy. ;)

After a quick review of the Philippines situation: Voice/2G Data: 900/1800; 3G:2100, the Cooper would be a good choice for both Thailand and the Phillipines. Not sure about 3G coverage in the Philippines but if it is available this model can handle it. Also it would work with AIS/Chiang Mai 3G (900 Mhz 3G) and TOT/Bangkok 3G, perhaps more soon? (2100 Mhz).

It will not work on True 3G (850 Mhz).

If you want a slightly better version of the Cooper, with a bigger 4" screen, take a look at the Samsung Galaxy SL 4GB. The price is dropping, maybe 11,500 now, and maybe 10,000 within 30 days.

Mobile data - Philippines (not all inclusive)

Brands- Globe, SMART and SunCellular

Where to buy SIM and topup? supermarkets, malls, kiosks, 7-11, Ministop (convenience store)

Thanks loma......I just left a 1,000 deposit on the cooper yesterday @8,900 at the local samsung distributer and service center. 500thb is for insurance of quick service, should i need it. they also had a beautiful and decent English speaking sales girl that will give me private tutoring on smart phones for dummies. It turned out that there was only one of the coopers left in the entire north of LOS [with that vendor] and they are sending it to CM for pick up.

Thanks for your input and hopefully answers to future questions....

I went and bought the Samsung Galaxy Mini today. A smaller screen and a slower processor than the Cooper, but seems to have all of the same "goodies". Cost 5KTHB and they included a screensaver film and a cheap plastic cover.

I gave up on the idea of TRUE 3G for now... read in another thread that TRUE only allows 3 gigs per month on their "unlimited" package. I have 3 gigs for breakfast most days. I'll get along with the Edge and Wifi connections for now.

The small 240 by 320 screen would be a deal-breaker for most I'm sure, but I specifically wanted small. I'm learning to create the "mobile app" sites, and by having the smallest screen ensures that I will see the same as potential viewers who have this small size, and when I rotate the unit I can see the same 320 wide that is common to a lot of other phones. Furthermore, it is a nice small package that fits comfortably in my pocket- same height, thickness and only about a centimeter wider than my trusty Nokia 6630.

When I graduate to iPhone apps, I'll "blow the load" and buy an iPhone that has all of the 3G capabilities, big screen, etc. In the meantime I've got a cool little set of training wheels for half the budget. Off I go on the learning curve....
