ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) -- Eight men have been arrested in recent weeks for allegedly plotting to assassinate Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari, local media reported on Saturday.

The Express Tribune newspaper said intelligence officials have carried out several raids in Islamabad and Punjab is the past three weeks, leading to four arrests in Islamabad and another four in Punjab. They are accused of plotting to kill Zardari.

According to the reports, intelligence officials had been monitoring the suspects by tapping their mobile phone lines. It was not immediately known how the men wanted to kill Zardari, or if they were part of a terrorist organization.

In late March, Pakistani police arrested a terrorist on suspicion of plotting to attack the country's Parliament House in Islamabad while Zardari was delivering a statement to parliament. The suspect later confessed that he had planned to attack the building.
