UN Security Council extends mandate of North Korea sanctions panel

2011-06-11 01:56:13 GMT+7 (ICT)

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- The United Nations Security Council on Friday extended the mandate of the expert body dealing with the UN sanctions imposed on North Korea for its nuclear arms testing.

The sanctions panel was extended for a third term in the resolution adopted by the 15-member Council. The panel of experts was established in 2009 in a resolution which condemned a nuclear test in North Korea.

The Security Council urged all States to provide any information on the implementation of previous resolutions that imposed sanctions against the North Korea and tightened an arms embargo.

Furthermore, the 15- member Council called for tougher inspections of cargo suspected of containing nuclear and ballistic missile equipment. Under Friday's resolution, the panel's mandate was extended until June 12, 2012.

In June 2010, the Security Council voted unanimously to extend for another year the mandate of the expert body dealing with the UN measures against North Korea. As in Friday's extension, the Council demanded a mid-term report on the mission's progress.

In 2009, it was determined that North Korea in violation and flagrant disregard of Council resolutions conducted nuclear arms tests beginning in 2006. The UN imposed sanctions on the Asian country and demanded not conducting any further nuclear test or any launch using ballistic missile technology.

The sanctions included tougher inspections of cargo suspected of containing banned items related to the country's nuclear and ballistic missile activities, a tighter arms embargo with the exception of light weapons and new financial restrictions.
