Getting A Tourist Visa In Kuala Lampur

Featured Replies

I am a Canadian planning to travel to Thailand this coming August from Japan, with my Japanese girlfriend. Below is our rough idea of our itinerary in thailand, it will be our first trip... I thought I would talk a little about about my idea for the trip - skip to the second paragraph for visa details

My rough plan is to fly from Tokyo - Kuala Lampur, and then to take a train/fly from Kuala Lampur to Hat Yai, and eventually on to Ko Samui. We have lots of time, and are simply to travel and explore the kingdom, with a mix of sightseeing and hunkering down for weeks to a month in one place to relax, cook, do yoga, and enjoy the setting. We'd like to stay in Thailand until around november, at which point we plan to fly to India to study yoga. I had been thinking the southeast coast (Ko samui and around) for august and september and up north (chiang mai or isaan and around) for october to avoid rainy weather, with some time in bangkok somewhere in the middle of it all to get a visa to India and pursue some bangkok related interests. Having a 3 month visa would make things a lot more convenient, rather than having to leave/return every 30 days

I am wondering about the viability of trying to get our visas in kuala lampur after we arrive, rather than trying to get a visa here in Japan before we leave. The visa requirements listed on the embassy website seem pretty draconian - I have just finished a year of teaching english in Japan, and have been saving this money for this trip. I don't really have a way to provide a certificate from my company as I won't have a job by the time I get to japan, and neither will my girlfriend. Furthermore, the embassy is rather inconvenient to visit in person (we live far from tokyo) and I'd rather avoid the hassle of having to mail my passport, documents etc. especially if there is a chance of rejection.

Having done my research on this website and elsewhere on the web it seems like it would be pretty easy to get a 3 month tourist visa once I arrive at the embassy in Kuala lampur (I plan to fly into Kuala lampur on dirt cheap flights from tokyo through air asia). I'm wondering what sort of documents I'd need, and how it would be best to go about doing this? Do i need to find some sort of agency in Kuala Lampur that will assist me with the visa, or if I just go to the embassy with my girlfriend will that work? Do i need flights into/out of thailand? I was thinking of taking the train from Kuala Lampur to Hat Yai. I thought maybe if i provided tickets from Kuala Lampur to Hat Yai, and Bangkok to Bangalore maybe I'd have a better chance of getting a visa? I'd prefer to take the train into thailand if I could, but I will do what I have to to get a visa...

Any assistance/clarification on the viability of this plan would be much appreciated

Should not be a problem getting a tourist visa in KL with just your passports/photos/fees. Trains are often used so they should not be asking for airline tickets. You should be able to show 20k baht if asked.

So with proof of 20k baht and 2 photos/passport I should have no problem getting a single entry tourist visa? No need for proof of travel into/out of thailand? Would a double entry be viable if I wanted to extend my stay in Thailand a bit longer?
