Religions Dept director-general to investigate picture of planking monk on Internet; says it violates monks' discipline /TAN_Network

Because nobody would be able to get their heads lower than his?

Now if the monks discover limbo dancing, that could be a laugh.

"Apichai believes that the craze will soon fade away, especially if it is frowned upon by the society."

The craze will die a natural death, and sooner, especially if it is not given publicitiy. :whistling:

A 17 year old has already died here in Australia after he fell of a balcony, and another one left in a comer when he was planking on the roof of a car whilst in motion. It took all that for the phase to be not so cool anymore.

Lets hope it doesn't get to that in Thailand.

Parents should supervise planking?

It could be dangerous, so a parent should supervise? Who writes this idiocy?????? How about knowing where your kids are most of the time, and giving them a clip around the ear whenever they do something stupid. I think that is far more likely to have an effect.

Maybe I should supervise them playing chicken with trains, or trying to play with the traffic.

In my day wanking was our thing and I'm sure a lot more satisfying than "Planking". What a stupid past time, I suppose the Australian youth can claim they've given something to the world but does the world really need it? Go to church, read a book or write one, surf internet porn or try wanking. In London "a Plank" means an idiot which can't be far wrong!

Actually it did NOT start or come from Australia.

But they have had a death there and an idiot in a coma after falling off a car. Who started it and where did it originate? ENGLAND.

Planking got itsstart about 15 years ago, when two teenagers would run around lying down inrandom public places across England. They named their little hobby the “LyingDown Game,” and like that it sat for the next 10 years, a memory in two youngboys’ minds. Meanwhile, in 2004, a French website collected photos of peopleposing “à plat ventre”—on one’s belly—reports Know Your Meme. Cut to 2007: GaryClarkson and Christian Langdon, the two English teenagers, decided to revisittheir childhood pastime and give it a Facebook page. Their friends, thenfollowed by friends of friends, began to join in on the fun. In 2008, a groupof teens began lying down around South Australia—except instead of “Lying Down”they called it “Planking,” giving the LDG a fresh name. Then, in 2009, sevenstaffers at an English hospital were caught posting photographs of their planksto Facebook. They were suspended, but the media were enthralled, and the memeas we know it was born. Facebook fans of the splintered groups grew by thethousands.

"and giving them a clip around the ear whenever they do something stupid" which would be all the time...but I agree.

Seriously, I cannot stress enough on this crazy fad having perils that should cause concern for parents, whether or not they are Thais.

Monkey see monkey do...is prevalent in this society.

I have written an article on planking, if you are interested to find out more, go to the link below:

As ever a load of completely facile advice from another Thai government official with not enough to do.

They were not stupid to obtain their government position, but when they achieved it they decided to be stupid.:whistling:

bah, I'm surprised that soo many of you are soo negative about the whole "Planking" craze

When you were a kid, did you climb trees?

Did you like to climb as high as you could, to impress your friends?

Your friends might not have all been running around with digital cameras on their cellphones to take pictures, but if they did they might have taken pictures of you while you were up the top of that tree. Likewise if you had the internet / facebook, and were proud of your picture, you'd have probably posted it up there.

Planking is really just like climbing to the top of the tree. Except that it doesn't have to be a tree, it just has to be original. So there are a lot of funny / clever / awesome planking pictures which aren't dangerous at all, likewise there are some which are dangerous. But most of the dangerous ones, are only as dangerous and foolhardy as the person who is involved would perhaps do anyway. The only difference, is that there's a picture of it, posted on the internet, so other people can find out about it.... and then because it's part of a "fad", people start labelling it and criticising the entire fad as a whole, just because a couple of people do something which looks dangerous.

I'm sure that you've all done crazy things when you were younger (Or had an adventurous friend you knew who did crazy things), whether it be leaning back or over a balcony, or clinging to a moving vehicle, climbing a tall tree, or posing near a dangerous animal. Planking is pretty much the same thing, it's just publicised and under a single label. Thus it gets a bit of negative media attention. Our society is just a bit nansy pansy these days.

So does this planking photo out-do the photo of the monk in the short time room?

Because nobody would be able to get their heads lower than his?

Very old tradition in Thailand...

Very popular with Phuket's Taxi drivers planking all day, they just doing it wrong: they use a hamooc :)

Should do a crackdown on plankers next

Many Thais have been training their whole life for such an activity. My girlfriend planks for about 15 hours a day. She should be a pro by now.

If planking makes it to the Olympics, Thailand will go home with the gold medal.

I don't plank but I see the quirky humor in it. Some of the photos / videos are a riot.

So "lying down" is English and "Planking" is Australian so where's your point? Both stupid but "Planking" is Australian

Update: Government has decided to only prohibit planking from 2-5 pm. Unless you have 10 people planking, in which it is permissible.

Offenders will face jail sentences of a maximum of 10 years and up to a 100 baht fine.

I think the ministry of commerce should take note. Thailand has potential to become a south-east asian or even world planking "hub". The place is perfectly suited to this. Forget about banking, e-commerce and cars. Stick to bonking, planking and food!

TAT probably requested a few billion for a planking campaign to bring quality tourists to Thailand. A special missionary planking tour to Pattaya massage venues will highlight the campaign.

Expect a surge of maritime planking when Talk like a Pirate Day comes around in November ... which usually falls close to one of Thailand's best festivals and could spawn a spate of Loy Planktongs
