Judge
Both are nice but the Rydges is right in the middle of the tourist district and you don't have to pay for transportation while the Orchid is far away. However, the Orchid is right next to a major shopping center and some decent restaurants, so not that inconvienient. Personally, I would go for Rydges. jackr
Didn't think much of the Rydges. Rooms are tight and the pool sees little sun, hidden as it is by the surrounding building. The Executive Tower of Chiang Mai Plaza knocks it on its ass.
Judge
Are we talking about the same hotel? There are no other big buildings near the Rydges on Chaiyapoom Road that I can think of including any "Chiang Mai Plaza" .
jackr
The surrounding building being the hotel itself. The Chiang Mai Plaza is the out near the Night Bazaar and is better. How's that?

cmsally
I'd second that. There seems to have been a big improvement in CM Plaza in the last few years. The CM Orchid is looking a bit "worn". Don't know much about Rydges but Empress Hotel is another good one.

The breakfast buffet is great and the lobby is still in a class by itself. The pool is still one of the best with a good gym attached and eateries in the area are often better than the downtown tourist district. Shopping mall showing first run films in English next door and an excellent Internet shop across the street. There is also a very good hair salon next door for the ladies. The only downside is access and egress is a bit awkward at times.
meadish_sweetball
Based on my own experience I would choose between the Empress and Rydges, but then again I dont know anything about the Orchid.

The Dan Sai Kid
I just stayed at the rydges - it was awful. It wasn't really any aspect in particular - it all seemed pretty crap. They serve leftovers from dinner at the breakfast buffet - how else would you explain veg chilli for brekkie? The coffee is terrible - they must use their grinds over and over. No gym. No changing room for the pool. The pool is freezing! There is grit all around the pool because of construction. The rooms are like a holiday inn/travelodge. The hotel just smacks of being finished off on the cheap.
