hi guys,

bought a home computer 6 months ago so i could download some movies. i live in the sticks so its my only outlet. tot came to put it in and it worked like a dream. i was saved. i downloaded 1 movie a day from utorrent and all was fine. for the past 2 weeks it has been running really slow, then up and down and then finally yesterday ......nothing. guy came from tot and checked everything. according to him ...a-ok.

from having a download speed of 204 mb per second to nothing confuses me. i know nothing about computers and now 2day someone at my work has said tot are blocking torrents. i now have a useless piece of equipment in my home. all thats left to do now is cancel my internet.

well done tot..............another one bites the dust.

You need to distinguish between the download speed your line is capable of delivering and the speed of downloading torrents. Torrent downloads can be slow for a variety of reasons, such as lack of seeders, large number of leechers, excessive seeding uploads on your part, etc. - a slow torrent download speed does not necessarily imply a line problem or any sort of blocking of torrents.

There's a speed test on thaivisa - follow the link on the menu bar above and see what download speeds you're getting with that. Run it a few times when you're not downloading anything else and see what speeds your getting. If they seem reasonable, then there isn't a problem with your line.

Do remember that ADSL is a contended service - that is, if your ISP says you have a 5 Mbps connection, that is the maximum speed. You're actually sharing the 5 Mbps with 25 (usually) or 50 other people. If some of them are downloading heavily your download speed will correspondingly drop.

All is not lost :)

It's well worth trying different ports from those set as the default in your Torrent client.

Turning on encryption can also help mask your downloading activities.

Finally, a VPN will hide everything from prying eyes. Expatshield is free and works well but be prepared for advertisements if you surf whilst it's active.

BitTorrent is a very complex protocol, with many, many variables. Every BitTorrent client is a little different. Every ADSL modem/router is a little different. Trouble-shooting BT issues via a forum like this is challenging unless you are prepared to share many, many details. My suggestion would be to find a friend, relative or 3rd party who is PC/network/BT savvy and have them take a look at your current situation.

Which BitTorrent client are you using?

What is the make/model of your ADSL modem/router?

Is your internet experience, excepting BT; browsing, watching Youtube videos or video streaming sites acceptable?

Can you do a speedtest? Go here, and choose "QUICK TEST" from the left-side menu --> http://speedtest.nectec.or.th/

Some good advise here.

http://speedtest1.totbb.net/ to test.

The lady who manages the bungalos here knows the guy that installed my tot personally and i have his number. Whenever the internet goes out for more than 1/2 hour, I call him. I can wait a little because I have Cat CDMA backup.

Overall ToT has been consistent 6Mbps down and 1/2 Mb up. It can go out occassionally if the power goes out (maybe takes server some time to come back online?), or if it rains heavy for extended period of time. But they are good about getting it back up quickly, especially if I call the guy directly after I reset the modem and nothing happens. I don't know what he does, but he does it well.

(Am i supposed to be getting 1Mbps upload?)

So the moral of story: have a local contact for technician and call whenever you have problem. Use a seedbox. I use seedboxone. I used to seed at home, as I have separate laptop. But I found that seedboxone.com is a great low cost solution, and it frees up my second laptop to do other things if I want. Plus I can download at full speed from seedbox. And it gives you an awesome seed ratio. I went from having 700gb to about 5 tb seed ratio on demonoid.me in about 1 month or so, and I don't think it recorded all of the upload. I probably have uploaded 10-15 tb.

edit: this post sums it up well
