It has been 2 - 3 years since the last time i travelled by air inside Thailand, but I was just about to book a flight to Krabi from Bangkok, and I immediately noticed how insanely expensive the tickets are these days!

About 280 $ / round trip, for ONE person..? What is going on here? When and why did Thailand decide to be uber expensive when it comes to air travel?

Seems everything in this country is just getting more and more expensive.

If you book last minute then you will get the highest rates. Better you book some weeks before then you will get a good price for a flight.

Example: August -> Bangkok to Krabi , Round Trip, 3020 Baht

If you book a little bit on time, you can get really great deals with especially Air Asia. A normal flight inside Thailand to any destination should be around 50 dollars one way. If you book a few weeks in advance yo can get flights for 30 bucks.

Even booking Thai at short notice isn't much more expensive, ie flying next week and returning a week later is only $180.

Where did you get that price from?

Nok Air has a special deal on at the moment . Don't know if they do the Krabi run but it is 999 thb for BKK to Chaing Mai. Check out their web site .

The OP may be looking at one of those web-sites, such as Opodo, which always seem to show only the airlines' dream-world fares, rather than the cheaper fares which we usually seek-out & find ?

And yes, as UG points out, the US$ is considerably-weaker than it used to be, a few years ago. :(

I find crazy prices like that when I try using the big name ticket search engines for domestic flight in Thailand. They only show rates offered by the bigboy international carriers. Try going directly to THAI, Airasia, etc.. you will never see prices like that.
