Hi All,

I am just about to go through the process of applying for a UK fiance visa. There's a few things that my wife to be is stressing about and I would be very grateful for some advice.

1) Although I gave proposing to her a lot of thought, I did kind of happen in the end when I wasn't planning for it to, and without thorough preparation - I actually proposed without a ring to give her (although she did get a nice bracelet as a present during that trip! ha).

She's worried now that no ring = no proof of an engagement! Surely a ring isn't necessary!? She thinks I need to show proof of purchase or something. Is this so?!

2) Accomodation: I don't have a tenancy agreement in place (it expired last year) and it's now purely on a rolling, month to month basis. If I mention this, can I provide evidence that I can comfortably afford somewhere else in the city I live (London) and that there's plenty of rental properties within my price range?

Other than a tenancy agreement (which I don't have), what else can I provide? I'm also unsure about contacting my landlord for a letter as he might ask me to sign a tenancy agreement, but I don't want to sign up to here for another year, and neither am I ready to move out. I've also got a housemate who I need to consider at the moment so I'm in a really a sticky situation.

3) Her mother has offered to also help her with finances until she is able to work (and therafter until she gains employment). I'm pretty sure I heard this is allowed.

What will suffice in terms of evidence for this? Does her mother just need to write a letter explaining that she will help if necessary and then provide evidence of her own financial status?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

To enter the UK as a Fiancée you need to satisfy the ECO you will marry within the 6 months.

  • No ring is required
  • A rolling tenancy agreement is fine cover this in your application
  • Her Mother is offering third party support & what are you offering ?
  • And may I ask exactly which country her Mother resides in ?

do you hope to move to a new place before your finance comes to the UK? or after? i am not sure what the waiting time is for a fiance visa. settlement visa waiting time is around 8-12 weeks. it maybe the same. so even if you plan on staying at your rented place for a short time when your finance is in the uk, then it might be worth trying to organise a short term, 6 month rental now.

i would think that if you have an agreement the landlord has to give you a minimum of 2 months notice, after the last rental payment is due, to evict - so this would add more security.

you would also need a council tax bill, maybe a copy of the electoral roll, and maybe 2 up to date utility bills. you will need to write a sponsor letter, outlining your relationship, finances, and accomodation. you will need copies of your birth cert, driving license, passport, copies of your credit cards, and bank statements for the last 3-6 months, proof of your realtionship - hotel receipts, photos, payments sent to her, shared rental agreement or house bills in thailand, and details of your job, with pay receipts your finance will need to take the A1 english language test, and take a TB test.

your mother can write a letter outlining her wishes to help your finance.

To add:

My then gf didn't, and still doesn't have an engagement ring (although she does have a nice Tiffany wedding ring now ;) )

Not sure why the OP mentioned the mother-in-law?

Personally, I'd get a new 6 month contract. It will nearly be finished by the time you get the visa, married and FLR!

Your fiancee can legally work as soon as you are married and is granted FLR.

Thanks for the replies.

Razell & ThaiVisaExpress - to answer the questions about my mother in law/third party support:

I'll obviously be supporting my fiance as much as I can, but her mother has kindly offered to contribute to our rent. She wants us to ensure we can afford a nice enough one bedroom apartment/flat so has agreed to support her/us with £400 per month. Is this okay to be mentioned in the application? What evidence do we need of this? A letter from her plus financial evidence (bank statements) to show she can afford it?

Also, because of the tenancy agreement (lack of), a friend has said that he and his wife can offer us accommodation 'if necessary' at their apartment. Is this worth mentioning to strengthen the accommodation part of the application? If so, what evidence would be required here? Is my guess of a letter plus, perhaps, a land registry certificate going to be enough?

I'm really trying to make this application as tight as possible because rejection would be too much to take for both of us!! This is why we're trying to cover things from all angles and even show that we have continengcy plans.

So stressful!!

Thanks all.

you will need to show where your money is coming from to support ypour wife - the more money you can show (from MIL) the better, but say exacty where it is coming from. your MIL will need to write a letter, and probably better to show maybe 3 months of her bank statements.

you need to show you can financially support your wife, the relationship is genuine and you can accomodate her in the uk. as far as the accomodation is concerned i would just stick to one place - either your flat now or your friend's flat. you will need photos, and utility bills, council tax statement and maybe a copy of the electoral roll, and a copy of the landregistry title. also you need to say how many people will be in the flat and give a description. your friend would also need to write a letter in support of this - and maybe mention how long you can stay there. you can say it is temporary until you find your own flat, but say the offer is secure until you move out into your own flat.

is your friend renting? does he have a rental agreement? does it say he can let other people stay at the flat if he is a tennant? include a copy of the agreement. maybe even worth writing to the letting agency / landlord and ask for a letter to say this is ok. you might think this is over the top? if it was me, i would be doing all this, and more

if you want to make the application as thorough as possible - is is better to give too much info than too less. but keep everything in order and easy to find - a good sponsor letter from you is also important.
