Was wondering if any of you good folk out there have seen your basic rototiller/garden tiller for sale anywhere in Isaan? The ones with the rotating blades/cutters that basically just churn up the dirt. I haven't looked in every shop in Khon Kaen, but I'm getting the feeling that I'm not going to find one there. Not looking for a ride on type, just the smallish ones you push around. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

There is a big post somewhere here on rototillers and you should probably see if you can find it. I'll give you a brief rundown of what i've seen.

Kubota makes a diesel powered walk behind rototiller that is built much like a two wheel tractor like the ones you see everywhere...in fact they can be converted one to the other....they appear to be really heavily built and rugged....my memory is that they are about 75,000 baht including a 9 horse power Kubota diesel. They look good but they are big...perhaps bigger than you want.

There is a Thai company that makes fairly large gas powered roto tillers that look much like what you would buy in the US but they don't seem to be very well engineered...they seem to have a relatively high center of gravity and the axle to which the blades are attached just doesn't look very heavy duty to me...I'm abit sceptical. These cost 20,000 baht without the motor and the motor could probably be had for 5,000 baht or more if you want to buy a really powerful Honda motor.

I've recently seen a Chinese made tiller that looks sort of like the Thai one but even more light weight looking...takes a gas motor...they wanted 20,000 for it which I think is too much since it costs the same as the Thai one but seems lighter weight....if this one could be bought for 10,000 baht I might be interested....I'd take off some of the blades and convert it from a one meter width to a 50cm width and then use it as a lightweight tiller....but they so far haven't budged on the price.

I'd like to find a really small and light weight tiller...I use lots of organic material so my soil is not so heavy so I don't need alot of power but I would like good maneuverability so the small light weight tillers that can be had cheaply in the US are just what I want but I haven't found one yet in Thailand....if you find one let me know.

For now what I'm doing is to layout my garden in long rows and then use my two wheeled tractor...this works well...I'm lucky I have a space big enough to do this. Also I bought a two wheeled tractor that has a reverse gear so I can make tight turns at the ends of the rows(there is a topic in the General Forum where I wrote at length about buying my two wheel tractor)...it works pretty good........I'd still like to find a small tiller.

I found these tillers by going to all the larger hardware and farming stores...keep looking and I think you'll find some....I live in the north.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep on looking then. The Kubota sounds good, bit pricey but seems like it would last a while.

Thanks again for the help.

I reread my post above and want to clarify that what I use now is my 2 wheeled tractor which does not have the rototiller capability....I use the plow, disc, and harrow to make my seed bed....it works fine but cumbersome when doing small garden plots.
