Chinese woman catches toddler who fell out of 10th floor window

BEIJING (BNO NEWS) -- A Chinese woman has saved the life of a two-year-old girl by catching the child after she fell out of a 10th floor window, state-run media reported on Sunday.

The incident happened on Saturday when Wu Juping, 31, saw 2-year-old Niu Niu dangling out of the window of her home near Hangzhou, the capital of eastern China's Zhejiang Province. The child was home alone when it happened.

Soon after Wu saw Niu, she quickly took off her high-heeled shoes and ran underneath the child, stretching her arms in the sky as the child plummeted towards the ground, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Wu was not able to completely catch Niu, but the child landed on her arm before hitting the ground, breaking her fall. "When she reached out to the child, she put her own life at risk," said Jin Dengfeng, the head of a local hospital.

Wu, who herself has a seven-month-old boy, suffered a broken arm and will soon require surgery. "She could have died or been paralyzed for the rest of her life if the child had hit her head or back," Jin said, added that Wu will need at least six months to recover from her injuries.

The child meanwhile was found to be bleeding internally and remains in a critical condition, although it is unlikely that the child would have survived at all if Wu had not tried to catch her. "I don't regret anything that happened. I just hope that Niu Niu will recover," Wu told Xinhua.

The report did not say whether the mother of Niu would possibly face charges for leaving her child home alone.
