Blast injures 17 children at Afghan school

2011-07-04 20:17:47 GMT+7 (ICT)

MAIMANA, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least seventeen young children were injured on Sunday when a blast hit the main gate of a school in northwestern Afghanistan, officials said on Monday.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said the blast happened on Sunday at the main gate of the Ali Shir Nawie School in Maimana, the capital city of Faryab Province. It said the explosion happened when a militant riding a motorbike threw a hand grenade towards students.

"Police have arrested the gunman who was committed this action," the ministry said in a statement. "The Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan condemns this un-Islamic and non-human act by the enemies of the nation."

Seventeen injured students were rushed to a nearby hospital after the explosion, where several of them remain in a serious condition. "The enemies of the Afghan people once again with this brutal attack proved that they are the enemies of the children, women and Afghanistan," the ministry added.
