Voice Search / Skype On Andriod

Featured Replies

1. I'm absolutely flabbergasted how well Google voice search works, utterly amazing, even long searches have a very good hit quota. Same e.g. map searches for 151w13St NYC.

It "reads' only US English but didn't have problem with my non-native English.

2. Installed skype on my DesireZ, not yet tested, I guess I'll be charged with the normal local unit cost to connect to the internet.

Anybody with experience?

Yes the Google voice works very well. I really like it. I also use it to enter quick messages or notes. The only drawback is that it needs a good fast internet connection. So when I'm out and about I really can't use it effectively, because I only have a GPRS/Edge connection.

Skype on Android is okay. However the PC version is much better. I haven't tried Skype 2.0 for Android yet, but I hear it's better. I only supports Skype Video only on a few devices and the Video require a high speed Wifi/3G connection.

Sometimes with a GPRS/Edge connection the voice breaks up, sometimes it's very clear.

Yes, you are charged for the internet time. Keep in mind that Skype is always checking status. So costs may add up if you don't have some kind of internet plan.

Now, with the new Skype, everytime I want to make a phone call, it asks if I want to use cell or Skype. I wish it did not do that.

I'm sure you can change that in settings somewhere. Skype is only officially supported on 3G and WiFi even though it might occasionally work on 2G. All of the Android voice reco/to text capabilities are impressive: search, navigate to, creating text.

I have the latest version of Skype for Android installed on my HTC Desire. It works pretty well on EDGE, however, test chat strings are not synced between the handsets and your PC...they only stay on whatever device you had them on initially. However, it's really cool to be able to chat or talk/chat to someone basically for free anywhere in the world when they too have Skype turned on.

I assume not only on G3 but via wireless internet connection as well, correct?

At least from my laptop I can skype/video via wireless modem.

One feature I use most often.

Arrange for autom charge to your credit card and you can phone any landline in one country without limitation costfree plus almost anywhere in the world at very low rates.

I don't like to have to call only when people are at their computers. Freedom!

Yes. Most people refer to this type of connection as "WiFi". And mobile broadband as "3G".

And while SKYPE (voice) may occasionally work on 2G, specially EDGE, it is by no means supported.
