Getting Connected To The Net In Bkk

Featured Replies

I want to get a line into my Bangkok apartment connecting me to the Net; I don't want wireless.

My wife says 3BB is a good company but I want to make sure of this before I sign a 1-year contract. We saw them at a stall and asked them about their speed, but the girl said that abthough they could guarantee 6mbps download speed for Thai websites, they could not guarantee this for foreign websites.

They only charge 600 baht/month, but for a connection they can guarantee as fast they charge 2500/month. Obviously I want the cheaper one, but I need to check........has anyone here been dissatisfied with their service ?

And which companies are a good alternative ?

All answers / suggestions appreciated.............

I am happy with my 6MB connection though I upgraded to the 9MB access; cannot reach upload of 1MB though

Thai Internet Service Providers (ISP) advertised speeds are only "in-Thailand" speeds...the connection you get between your residence and the ISP servers. For "outside Thailand/international" web sites you'll probably get a real world speed in the 500Kb to 2Mb ballpark depending on the time of day. The 3BB 2500Baht/month 5Mb/1Mb plan you mention is 3BB's Premier plan focused toward small to medium size businesses where they need better speed to "outside Thailand/international" web sites....now how much faster/stable the international bandwidth under the Premier plan really is I couldn't say. Baisically, the Premier plan provides a lower User/Contention Ratio of around 10 to 1 users versus standard plans which are usually in the 20-50 to 1 range. A lower contention/user ratio results in more bandwidth/higer speed.

The internet companies available to you is going to depend on the companies authorized to service your area/residence. For example, here in my western Bangkok moobaan, TOT was the only company authorized to have telephone/DSL lines, although JINET internet was available as concessionaire on the TOT lines. Plus, the maximum speed available to my moobaan was 6Mb. Now that has changed over the last month as True installed "cable" TV and internet lines to our moobaan, but not phone service. I switched to the True Cable 20Mb/2Mb plan and it working good so far; up to this point I had had the TOT 2Mb, 4Mb, and 6Mb plans as TOT slowly upgraded internet to my moobaan. The TOT 2Mb plan sucked, the 4Mb and 6Mb plans worked OK, except for streaming video like YouTube videos....LOTS of video pausing.

Regardless of the internent companies servicing your area, the speed and reliability you get will depend greatly on the quality of the line connected to your residence. Location, location, location has a big say in what companies and speed are available. Good luck.
