July 10, 201114 yr I was wanting to do a 3-4 day trip from CM to Keng Tung. I was going to drive to the Mae Sai border. From there I was wondering if there was a bus that goes the rest of the way?...
July 10, 201114 yr Yes there is. I goggled it. We were there four years ago We were passing through to the Chinese border. We had hired a car and driver. There is a lot to see including poverty. The country is beautiful. The people are friendly but they seem to have given up any hope of a better life. I had to use Thai money at the hotel they would not take Burmese money. The town on the border with China would only take Chinese money. On the way back I pretty well forced them to take Burmese money. It was the dry season and the reservoir was low so they only had power from about 6:30 at night to around 6:00 in the morning. You have to surrender your passport at the border and they give you a travel permit. This you give to the driver as he is responsable for every one on the bus. When they stop at a check point he takes all the paper work in for inspection.
July 11, 201114 yr As of a few months ago - You can go, but ever since the Kokang Incident you're required to have a guide with you at all times. There's a set fee of 1000baht per day per person in your group and you need to pay for the guide's food and accommodation. I don't know if you can get to Mong La on the Chinese border anymore, but it's worth a shot.

Monglar on the Chinese border was very nice also. Being big and as westerner I was the center of attention. As I said earlier if you go take Chinese money. They asked for a deposit on the key and I had not brought enough for that. They refused Burmese and Thai money. Luckely I had a American $100 bill and on the advice of a fellow watching they took it as a deposit. No problem getting it back when I turned the keys in.
