THAI-CHINA AGREE TO HAVE A ROLE IN CONTROL THE PRESS WHO MAKES SOCIETY PROBLEM

The Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of China have made an agreement, in which both governments will have more power to control the press that initiates social problems. Meanwhile, the general public has been urged to check the press releases.

The Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. SURANAND VEJJAJIVA, said he had a chance to discuss public relations and communication issues with Chinese officials during his official visit to China from October 21st to 24th. He said China’s state-of-art technology system and the method of presentation by using local knowledge have gained massive interests from domestic and international countries.

Thailand and China have agreed that the regional press has been influenced by the press from the west in both positive and negative ways. Thus, in order to be the center of the press in Asia, both of Thailand and China should coordinate with each other and unite the communication processes.

In addition, both nations have also perceived that the mass media can be out of control due to globalization. Therefore, a plan has been suggested to enable the government sector to play a more important role in examining the members of the press who triggers problems to the society.

Mr. SURANAND commented that the state media, particularly Channel 11, has to improve its method of presenting the local knowledge, and make the programs more captivating and interesting for viewers nationwide.

I wonder if this minister realises the significant proclaimed difference between China and Thailand.

Thailand is supposed to be a democracy. Yea I know, TiT.

The above report about the government controling the media is false.

However, there is nothing wrong with the government controling the media.

They know what's best for us and are only trying to help.

Criticizing them is unpatriotic.

If we just co-operate everything will be fine.

Sounds like yet another way of blaming foreigners for all the perceived social ills. :o

Is that another way of saying

We both want to tell the same lies

Press freedom in Thailand increasingly restricted: report

(DPA)

22 October 2005

BANGKOK - Thailand’s ranking fell sharply in the Worldwide Press Freedom Index, to 107th place from 59th last year, according to the Paris-based watchdog group Reporters Without Borders.

The report accompanying the indexed rankings of 167 countries did not spell out the reasons for Thailand’s precipitous fall from its September 2004 position.

But it covered a period when the government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra moved aggressively against critics by filing a string of defamation lawsuits and forcing some broadcast programmes off the air.

The report said East Asia was among the most difficult areas for journalists, with five countries in the region placing in the bottom 10 rankings for press freedom.

North Korea maintained its place at the bottom, with Burma ranking 163rd, China 159th, Vietnam 158th and Laos 155th.

The organization said it examined every kind of violation against the news media and individual journalists, and registered the degree of impunity enjoyed by those responsible for such violations.

It also took into account the legal situation affecting the news media and the behaviour of the authorities towards domestic news media and the foreign press.
