Disaster zone in Chumphon

CHUMPHON: -- Continuous heavy rains that have caused severe floods in three districts of Chumphon affecting over 1,000 families and damaging around 20 roads, have led the governor to declare the area a disaster zone and call for immediate relief work to begin.

Governor Pinai Anantapong said the authorities had responded by coming to the aid of villagers affected in the area, which has experienced heavy downpours since Friday, causing flash-floods across the province.

Some 600 families have been affected and 14 roads damaged in Muang district, while Tha Sae district saw 500 houses affected by the flooding and 16 roads and three bridges damaged, Pinai said. He said two houses in Pathiu district had been totally destroyed and a kilometre-long stretch of Petchkasem Highway had been inundated by 25-centimetre-deep water.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has warned that although the low-pressure area has moved westwards away from Thailand, heavy rains and possible flash-floods could still affect flood-prone areas in the South including Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phattalung, Songkhla, Ranong and Phang Nga.

The report warned fishermen of powerful waves and advised small ships not to sail today.

ASSISTANCE IS BEING PROVIDED TO FLOOD-STRICKEN RESIDENTS OF CHUMPHON

Latest reports still indicate rising water level at Tha Sae (ท่าแซะ) District, Chumphon Province, while the permanent secretary of the provincial administration has facilitated evacuation of residents in the District due to the continually rising flood level.

The water level at the Pathomphorn (ปฐมพร) intersection is reportedly too high for cars to pass, and commuters had to take alternate routes to avoid the downtown area.

Chumphon Permanent Secretary Weera Sriwatthanatrakoon (วีระ ศรีวัฒนตระกูล) had led officials in dispatching assistance via flat bottom boats, and evacuated residents in Nagatam (นากะตาม) Subdistrict in Tha Sae District due to the increasing water level in that locality.
