Hi I am coming BKK in November for two weeks, and then going India. I will then return again to BKK in January for two months. Can I get a free entry visa on arrival in BKK, and then get a tourist visa before I leave the UK for the two month visit in January.

No, either you apply for a double entry tourist visa in Hull or you go to Thailand without a visa and once in India apply for a tourist visa there. (assuming you already have the ticket BKK-India, otherwise the double entry tourist visa will be best.)

It is a visa exempt entry for 30 days and as long as you have the onward ticket within those 30 days it should not be a problem.
