Birthdays In Thailand

I just wondered what sort of days Birthdays are in other peoples homes.

In my home, when it's my birthday it's usually a pretty low key affair and we might go for a meal with some friends and if it's my daughter's birthday we might have a small gathering at our house but when it's my wife's birthday, there's a lot of discusion about buying gold. 2, 3, 4, or 5 baht is talked about and a long face when I tell her money is hard to find, now that the exchange rate is down to 46 or whatever it is and will it be ok if I give her 10,000 baht this year. Birthdays, these days, seem to be something to be got through.
