Iran nuclear scientist shot dead in Tehran

2011-07-24 00:43:01 GMT+7 (ICT)

TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) -- A prominent Iranian nuclear physicist was killed on Saturday by unknown assailants in Tehran, informed sources with the Iranian police said.

Press TV reported that 35-year-old Daryoush Rezaie was killed in front of his house in eastern Tehran on Saturday afternoon by assailants who were riding a motorcycle. His wife was also injured during the attack and was immediately transferred to hospital.

On November 29, 2010, two other Iranian academics became the target of terrorist attacks. Unidentified terrorists detonated bombs in the vehicles of Dr. Majid Shahriari and Professor Fereydoun Abbasi in separate locations in Tehran. Shahriari was killed immediately, but Abbasi and his wife sustained injuries.

Iran blamed the national intelligence agencies of Israel, United Kingdom and the United States for those attacks.

The Los Angeles Times

It had initially been thought that gunmen on motorcycles had killed Darioush Rezaei, a physics professor whom reports linked to the country’s nuclear program. But the victim was later revealed to be Darioush Rezaeinejad, a student at Khajeh Nasir University.

It's hard to believe any news reports coming out of Iran - all is so controlled there. There is no such thing as objective reporting in Iran.

If it was the nuclear scientist (either targetted or missed), then it was possibly the work of Israel's Mossad.

Do you have a link? I can not find any reports that support this statement. They all say that Darioush Rezaei is dead. :ermm:

Thank you. There seems to be conflicting reports.

Deputy Interior Minister Safarali Baratlou said it was not clear whether Rezaie was a nuclear scientist, Iran's Labor News Agency ILNA reported. "Police investigations are continuing ... Nobody has been arrested so far," Baratlou told ILNA.

The state news agency IRNA also reported the assassination but gave different details. Officials were not available for comment.

"Rezaie was a PhD student in electronics ... He was assassinated in front of his child's nursery in Bani Hashem street," IRNA said, quoting an unnamed official. "His wife, who was wounded in the attack, has been hospitalized."

There still seems to be a lot of confusion as to the identity of the murdered man but, no matter who he was, to gun a man down in front of his 4 year old daughter is a barbaric act especially as the mother was also injured in the attack.

While that is very possible, we shouldn't forget that the Gulf Sunni Arabs don't want Iran to have nukes either.
